Opposition MPs lash out at Defence Minister for ‘defending’ traitors who leaked information

Members of Parliament of the Opposition front slammed Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the Defence Minister for allegedly defending the ‘traitors’ who were found to have leaked information to a foreign embassy recently and said that a Royal Commission of Inquiry should be set up to investigate the Defence Ministry and to reveal those who were involved. Saifuddin Naustion, the PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) Member of Parliament of Machang slammed Zahid for ‘defending’ the people involved and that they should not be regarded as traitors because of their involvement in a ‘turnover’ operation. He said “The minister should reveal who the traitors are. Punitive action must be taken against them, as this is a serious offence that undermines national security,”

Zahid had earlier said that “Those involved could not be exposed for security reasons as they were now helping the defence intelligence unit investigate espionage activities. It was not proper to expose the embassy involved in view of “comfortable bilateral relations” with the country concerned. The espionage issue was exposed recently to remind and sensitise members of the armed forces and the Defence Ministry against foreign operatives who may use them as targets to source information.”
