PKR close ranks for Hulu Selangor campaign launch

PKR launched its Hulu Selangor campaign machinery last night with a show unity among the party leaders, despite disquiet over Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim’s role as by-election director.

The Selangor mentri besar had waded into the role, despite Kuala Langat MP Abdullah Sani’s position as state election chief in leading the charge for the April 25 by-election after the death of Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

Abdullah was named deputy director of operations for the by-election and received the party flag in a simple ceremony at a mini-stadium within the constituency.

“I know my friends, Abdullah Sani and Azmin Ali, have been working very hard in preparing the election machinery, let us throw our support behind to ensure our success in the by-election,” said Khalid to loud cheers from some 300 party workers who attended the launch.

Vice-president Azmin, when briefing the party campaigners, reiterated Khalid’s crucial role in the campaign.

“There is only one general in this by-election, and he is Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim,” said the Gombak MP.

Khalid’s appointment as the election chief was said to have caused unhappiness among some party leaders, but Azmin had denied the infighting claims, adding he had made the suggestion for Khalid to take up the post.

The launch of the PKR campaign was also attended by party election director Fuziah Salleh, PAS deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa, and DAP’s Tan Seng Giaw.

The by-election, the first in Selangor since Election 2008, is crucial for PKR as it had lost four federal lawmakers since February.

Nomination day for the Hulu Selangor by-election is April 17, and PKR faces an uphill task as all three state seats were won by Barisan Nasional (BN) in Election 2008.

Abdullah has handpicked several grassroots leaders to co-ordinate the campaign in the state seats while Khalid has announced awards to win over the population in the federal seat, which covers an area the size of Malacca.

PKR will announce its candidate on April 13, two days ahead of BN.

There are 64,500 voters in Hulu Selangor, with the Malays making up 52.7 per cent of the total while the Chinese constitute 26.3 per cent, Indians approximately 19 per cent and other races at 1.7 per cent.

Sibu vote forces Pakatan’s hand in seat talks

The Sibu by-election, triggered by the death of Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Datuk Robert Lau today, has brought a greater sense of urgency to talks between the DAP and PKR, the two main Pakatan Rakyat (PR) parties in Sarawak.

As state elections loom, DAP and PKR are still locked in a tussle over which party gets to field candidates in at least five state constituencies which are considered opposition strongholds.

The two parties last held talks in late January but did not reach an agreement on the seat allocation.

But Lau’s death today means the two sides will have to meet sooner to decide who contests the Sibu by-election.

In Election 2008, both PKR and DAP fielded candidates in the contest which was eventually won by Lau.

Lau, from Sarawak BN party SUPP, defeated state DAP chief Wong Ho Leng and PKR’s Lim Chin Chuang in a three-cornered fight to win his fifth term as Sibu MP.

The SUPP man won by a majority of 3,235 votes. He garnered 19,138 votes against Wong’s 15,903 and Lim’s 812.

Despite signs that state polls could be held anytime soon, both parties have moved no closer to an agreement.

Leaders from both parties said, however, that they were confident seat negotiations could be concluded ahead of the state elections which must be held by the middle of next year.

“We are going to have a fourth round of negotiations in the middle of April. There are still five seats undecided,” said Wong, who expects the elections to be called in September.

Wong refused to disclose the contentious seats.

But it is understood that the seats are mainly urban, Chinese-dominated seats which both parties are confident of winning.

In Election 2008, the two parties could not come to any agreement and were caught in a three-cornered fight against BN in the two federal constituencies of Stampin and Sibu. Both were won by the ruling coalition.

Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian said he was confident a three-cornered fight with BN could be avoided in the next state elections.

“I’m always very positive, I think we are confident this whole thing will be settled. Our objective is to ensure straight fights and to field winnable candidates,” Baru told The Malaysian Insider.

The lawyer-activist however refused to say the number of seats the party is going to contest, saying that “it is subject to our negotiations with our coalition partners.”

Currently, PKR controls only the urban Padungan state seat in the Sarawak assembly.

“I have told the machinery to be ready, the election can be held as early as June, if later than that it will be a bonus for us,” said Baru.

The DAP, which controls six seats in the 71-member state legislative assembly, has said it intends to contest 20 seats this time.

In the 2006 state elections, DAP fielded 12 candidates, PKR 25, SNAP 29 and PAS one. Twenty independents also tried their luck.

“We expect to win all. We don’t go in for fun. If you look at the general election in Perak and Penang, DAP won all the seats we contested,” said Wong.

The opposition collectively won nine seats in 2006, its best performance ever due to the increase in land premium payments and oil price hikes, which took place just two months before the state assembly was dissolved.

DAP and PKR are hoping to better that performance, but they will first have to settle their differences for the Sibu by-election.

People wanted change, so they voted opposition – PM on Hulu Selangor by election

The prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that the upcoming by-election of Hulu Selangor is seen as a test for the BN (Barisan Nasional) of Selangor and claims that the reason why the opposition was able to capture the Selangor state in the last general election was because the people there wanted change and not so much because they wanted to vote for the opposition. Najib, who was speaking at the Selangor BN’s convention yesterday called on the leaders and members of the state’s BN to be diligent and stay united to win the by-election of Hulu Selangor.

He said "The Selangor BN is still strong but more importantly we are not here to just continue with our struggle but also to listen to the wishes of the people of Selangor. The state BN should rekindle the spirit of cooperation demonstrated by parties when the Alliance Party was formed under Malaysia's first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman in 1955. To recapture Selangor, BN needed its component parties to work together because no single party could garner the support of voters from other communities.

The defeat in the 2008 general election was a bitter test of BN's resilience and said that the coalition should now rise to the occasion and win back the people's confidence. The people had given the BN a clear message in 2008 -- that they had the power to change. Today, I was told, it was not so much because they supported the opposition. It's because they wanted the BN to change. If we rectify our weaknesses, if we now deliver on our promises, then the people will see that we have truly changed,"

Zulkilfli and Zahrain selected to travel with PM to United States

2 independent Members of Parliament, Datuk Seri Zahrain Hashim of Bayan Baru and Zulkifli Noordin of Kulim-Bandar Baharu will be travelling to the United States next week with the prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. They have been selected by Najib instead of his BN (Barisan Nasional) parliamentarians to ensure that the bills tabled in the parliament can be passed when the sitting takes place next week. Zahrain and Zulkifli were both from the PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) and had turned independent only in recent months. They will be travelling to Washington with Najib where he is expected to launch the Malaysia-United States Caucus then. According to local news portal, a BN MP said “Some of us were initially on the Washington trip but Najib wants us to stay back and come to Parliament everyday,

According to Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, apart from the 2 independents, Najib will also be accompanied by Datuk Seri Rais Yatim, the Information Minister and Malaysian’s ambassador to the US, Datuk Seri Jamaluddin Jarjis.

Expelled PKR member Zulkifli denied that he is part of Najib’s entourage. He said “I will be in Washington for about a week. I am going to Washington, the Prime Minister will be in New York. I am going earlier, it has no connection with the Prime Minister’s visit.... no ... no,”

Najib has made the biggest blunder as PM by taking these two sellers to the US with him. There are many loyal UMNO members who have been left out.How do you think they are going to feel? Traitors to PKR are being rewarded while loyal UMNO members are being sidelined. I assume these two traitors/prostitutes are going to stand on UMNO tickets in the coming General Elections.I feel loyal UMNO members who have sacrificed their time over the years are going to feel disgusted and vote against UMNO in the coming elections

THE MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT THOUGHT U.S WILL LISTEN TO THESE 2 POISONOUS FROGGIES TO LIE N COVER UP FOR NAJIB, ARE THE AMERICAN GOING TO FALL FOR IT. LET WAIT N SEE RATHER SOMEHOW WE GET THE ANSWER TOO.

Najib balls were held tightly by Fat Mama. Fat Mama wants to do a lot of shopping, so she needs two more baggage boys. Who else will be best for the task...Of course, these two motherf**ker FROGS.

Hulu S’gor will be yardstick to show if BN can recapture Selangor

Datuk Seri Noh Omar, the deputy chairman of the Selangor BN (Barisan Nasional) said that the by-election of Hulu Selangor will be a useful yardstick for the party to judge if they have a good chance of taking back Selangor in the next general election because if the BN wins, then it would change the political landscape significantly in the state.

This is because the parliamentary seat there is a stronghold for the BN for many years before the March 8, 2008 General Elections which was won by the PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat). He said "The Hulu Selangor by-election is very risky as we are up against a state government which will use all its resources. A win for BN means there is change but a loss will be a slap for changes done by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. We have to adopt a different strategy by focusing on quality rather than quantity. BN has to change strategy from being on the defensive to offensive."

1Malaysia purely me and my colleague’s idea - PM

The Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has denied allegations that the 1Malaysia concept mooted by him was not copied from Israel (One-Israel) or any other countries and that it was an original idea that he created together with his colleagues. This came in light after it the recent issue where Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the opposition leader claimed that the idea was originally the one which was adopted by the Israeli government some time back.

Najib said “It is purely mine and some of my colleagues together. Although the one concept was not new as many countries such as China used it to promote a sense of belonging or togetherness among its people, the 1Malaysia concept went beyond that, that it was 1Malaysia - People First, Performance Now. The tsunami in the last 2008 general elections when the Barisan Nasional (BN) for the first time lost a two-third majority in parliament, was an indication that the people wanted massive changes politically and economically. The concept was a guiding philosophy for his government to serve the people irrespective of their race and culture, emphasizing that the ultimate goal of any government was to serve the people.

1Malaysia concept a political gimmick

Following Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's assertion that he was "a Malay first and Malaysian second” and the statement was supported by our Prime Minister, it has sparked concern from other parties. Bandar Kuching MP Chong Chieng Jen said Malaysians should have in mind that they are Malaysians and must set aside race or religion to remove barrier that can prevent them from uniting the country.

Chong find it ridiculous as none from Barisan Nasional voiced out that Malaysians should put themselves as Malaysians first instead of stating their race or religion. He also pointed out that 1Malaysia concept was only a political gimmick by presenting the book titled Government Transformation Programme written and produced from Prime Minister’s Department.

In the book, page 11 stressed that one must put themselves as a Malaysian first. Contrary to statement, in the last few weeks, government actions do not reflect what was written in the book.

Anwar planning to capture S’wak - Nalla

Datuk K S Nallakaruppan, a former friend of opposition leader Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who has been outspokenly hitting out at Anwar in recent weeks has claimed that Anwar is now preparing to ‘migrate’ to Sarawak to try and win the state elections there under the PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) umbrella.

He said “Anwar aims to win more seats in the coming election in Sarawak. He still harbours a dream to be the prime minister and make his trusted ally Azmin Ali the deputy prime minister. We know that Anwar is alarmed by the current political situation and his sodomy case in court,” Nalla has been publicly criticizing his former friend where they used to play tennis together added that “Anwar failed to bring down Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak by making baseless allegations against him. I will not be surprised if Anwar fled from the country one day,”

PKR can break down BN stronghold in Hulu S’gor

Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, the president of PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) said that the party is confident that they can break the BN (Barisan Nasional) stronghold of Hulu Selangor at the upcoming by-election of the Parliamentary seat. She said “The Hulu Selangor seat was a “unique” one to contest since all three state seats were not opposition strongholds. (But) I think the mood is good,” Asked on when PKR will announce its candidate, she said “See what Barisan Nasional does first, We will see when is the appropriate time to announce our candidate. Tengoklah BN dulu (wait for BN first),”

According to Fuziah Salleh, the Elections Director of PKR, “The total number of candidates on PKR’s list had now ballooned to “at least 12” names, from the original five who were at first suggested. We have continued to receive more. And this is a good thing because it shows that people have confidence in us and are willing to contest on the PKR ticket. It is unlike before when it was so hard to find candidates. The list would only be finalised during the political bureau meeting next Wednesday and the name of the selected nominee might be announced then. But I cannot say for certain now because we have agreed that this would be the prerogative of the president, the de facto leader and the special committee that is formed specifically for the vetting of the candidates. The selection will be based on the candidate’s winnability factor and not the race. Race is not an issue here because we are looking at someone who can represent all races,

No sorry for Perkasa, BN Chinese leaders say

Teng and Low say Perkasa’s ideology was incompatible with Najib’s 1 Malaysia.

Two ethnic Chinese Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders have openly snubbed Perkasa Youth’s demand for an apology, continuing instead to criticise the Malay rights group by saying that its struggles were not in line with the prime minister’s 1 Malaysia concept.

Penang Gerakan chief Datuk Teng Hock Nan and MCA deputy secretary Loh Chew June, who locked horns with the right-wing group when they labelled them “racists”, told The Malaysian Insider today that they refused to apologise for their statements.

Perkasa Youth chief Arman Azha Abu Hanifah had called on the duo to apologise within 48 hours from Friday, following their criticisms on the non-governmental organisation’s inaugural congress last Saturday.

Arman had claimed that failure to do so meant the two were in total disrespect of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who has granted his patronage of the group, as well as the Federal Constitution, which Perkasa claims to uphold.

“That is nonsense. I will not apologise. I do not want people to misuse the Constitution at their whims and fancies.

“They (Perkasa) are not here to unite the races, they are here to segregate everyone,” said Loh, when contacted.

He insisted on sticking to his stand that Perkasa was just hampering Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1 Malaysia concept, which calls for equal opportunity for all.

“In this concept, we need more open-minded leaders; not leaders who emphasise on one race. We should emphasise on having fair and square policies for all the races... it should not be about Malay, Chinese or Indian, it should be about Malaysians,” he said.

Loh also lambasted Perkasa leader Ibrahim Ali for flashing the “keris” (traditional Malay dagger) during the group’s congress, saying that the act did not carry a positive connotation.

“All this waving of the keris is not a good thing. Even Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein’s similar act had a negative impact on the community,” he said.

Loh also claimed that Najib himself was not supportive of the movement’s imbalanced views, as they failed to reflect the premier’s wish to promote racial unity and harmony.

1 Malaysia calls for equal opportunity for all, says Teng

“I don’t think the prime minister wants this. In fact, this is very disrespectful to Najib’s 1 Malaysia concept. Perkasa should apologise to Najib because they are destroying his good concept,” he said.

Teng concurred with Low, saying that when Perkasa emphasised so extensively on fears felt by the Malays that the Chinese would soon take over, it proved that they were not in full comprehension of what 1 Malaysia stood for.

“As a senior politician, I would like to advise everyone to work towards the commonality of all, rather than to focus on conflicts. We must work in line with what the BN and the government is trying so hard to do — to promote the 1 Malaysia platform.

“Once they (Perkasa) can understand the true meaning of 1 Malaysia, the question of asking me or whomever to apologise and threatening to pressure my party to sack me, does not arise.

“My sacking would merely become a drop of blue ink in the ocean,” Teng told The Malaysian Insider this morning.

He added that by embarking on the stand that the Malays were threatened by the Chinese, Perkasa was merely creating mistrust and suspicion between the races and Gerakan would never accept that.

“Perkasa is campaigning for the rights of the Malays, the rights of the Bumiputeras, the special position of the Malay rulers and Islam as the official religion, as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

“I believe no one has ever questioned those rights. But the statements that they made during their congress can easily be perceived by the non-Malay Malaysians as subjects that are banking on extremely divisive racial lines.

“Gerakan, as a multiracial party, believes in moderation, and we abhor any form of extremism, whether or not it is coming from a political party or an NGO or an individual,” said Teng.

He reminded Perkasa that while Article 153 of the Federal Constitution spoke of Malay’s special rights and the social contract, subsections 7 and 8 also stipulates that all Malaysians, regardless of race or religion are protected by the Constitution.

“Furthermore, Article 8 (2) speaks on how no Malaysian can be discriminated on, based on race or religion. Hence, this means that all Malaysians who love the country must put aside their personal or vested agendas and work towards the commonalities they can find in our diversity — promote similarities rather than conflict.

“Anyone who says that one race is threatening the other or one race is more superior to the other, is promoting extremism,” he said.

[The prime minister has described Perkasa as “not so extreme”.—file pic] The present verbal sparring between the non-Malay parties of the BN and Perkasa indicates the mounting pressure on the prime minister to quickly choose the path he wants to follow or face a backlash in the near future.

On the one hand, Najib had already openly accepted the group when he claimed in an interview that Perkasa was “not so extreme” and pointed out that the group still believed in Umno’s abilities to run the country.

On the other, Najib’s defence of Perkasa would likely also face heavy criticism from his non-Muslim counterparts in the BN.

Opposition leaders yesterday pointed out that Najib had fallen into a Catch-22 situation and would very soon have to find a way out of the dilemma.

The prime minister has described Perkasa as “not so extreme”

“The question that all Malaysians want answered now is whether Najib plans to stick by his concept and take middle ground or succumb to the pressures of Perkasa,” DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang had said.

Perkasa is UMNO's doing. Perkasa is their voice and bad guy while UMNO tries to be the "good guy" ... it's just a politcal ploy to fool voters.

toll-taking over the backs of the toiling-warriors.

Toll-takers will always focus on promoting differences, and will conjure up any form of bogeyman to create division.

now let see what Perkasa can do. Perkasa is a empty tin which make a lot of noise. They are selfish thinking about themselves rather than the country. Grow up leaders for the future generation and don't be "katak dibawah temperung". Look out of Malaysia to advance our culture.

The chinese community is awaiting to see how Chua soi lek would stand up against Perkasa.
The current assumption is MCA will continue to kow tow to UMNO/Perkasa.

Najib is now neither here nor there as far as the 1Malaysia he tried to propagate. Now he himslef is cvonfused of the concept he put forward he had not done thorough enough understanding of the potential ramification of 1Malaysia.

Now all the ramifications started to manifest, there are many instances, even his own deputy had said something completely contradictory to his concept of 1Malaysia, that he thinks and proud to ne a "Malay first Malaysian second, or later".

If that is basic of 1Malaysia, then the concept as expounded by Muhyideen and later supported by Najib, is indeed driving a wedge between the multi races in this country, not uniting all the Malaysians but trying to distinguish each citizen selectively according to their races.

PM claims PERKASA supports Umno and not extreme

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, the Prime Minister commented on the Malay-rights group PERKASA saying that they are ‘not so extreme’ until it cannot be accommodated by the federal government led by BN (Barisan Nasional). Speaking in an interview on Al-Jazeera, he said that the NGO (Non-Governmental Organisation) was a movement that ‘by and large supportive of Umno’ and not as ‘rebellious’ as some claimed.

He said “Perkasa backs the party as it is “the only vehicle” that can promote Malay interests” and “hold this country together”. It is up to the government to engage with Malay rights groups to persuade them that such privileges would not cease. Perkasa is not so extreme, if you listen to them carefully. They can shout about Malay rights as long as they are not extreme in their views, and you know, to the extent that we can accommodate Perkasa. And we can accommodate also the non-Malays as well. At the same time non-Malays will not be ignored. I do engage the non-Malay groups as well, so as prime minister, I've always said I'm prime minister for all Malaysians,”

“They (PERKASA) are by and large supportive of Umno and they believe that Umno is the only vehicle that can really, not only promote Malay interest but really hold this country together. I think Umno is a strong party. Umno is well-established. Umno can deal with the emergence of Perkasa as well as other groups as well,”

MIC confident of regaining Hulu S’gor Parliamentary seat

Datuk Dr S Subramaniam, the vice-president of MIC said that the party is confident that BN (Barisan Nasional) is very confident that they will regain Hulu Selangor at the by-election of the parliamentary seat on April 25. He said that this is because the majority of the 12,000 votes from the Indian community is backing BN now after having voted for the PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) in the 2008 General Election.

He said “The MIC is confident the Barisan Nasional (BN) will recapture the Hulu Selangor parliamentary seat in the by-election on April 25. A majority of the estimated 12,000 Indian voters in the constituency now backed the BN after having switched allegiance in the general election in 2008. The Indians in the constituency were traditionally strong supporters of the BN.”

People has lost faith in PKR - Najib

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who has received some very favorable comments and sentiments of his first anniversary as the country’s premier said that the opposition party PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) led by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is falling apart and that the people have lost faith in them, therefore they are definitely not fit to lead the country in any way. He said “If its inner circle is losing faith one by one and leaving the party, with some joining us, what kind of message is that? Ezam went to jail for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Ezam refused to stand against me in Pekan and also refused when Anwar asked him to fitnah (slander) me about Altantuya. But is there proof? No, he just whacks. If you don’t believe, ask Ezam and Zulkifli. I have sworn in the mosque (about this matter), has he?” He added that “I have felt the heavy burden that I carry on my shoulders. I take all this as part of my responsibility as a leader and I vow with the rest of my comrades to work hard to uphold the rakyat’s trust and bring success to the country.”

Najib said that he will soon meet US President Barack Obama. “He is not meeting the Opposition Leader but the Prime Minister of the country, a Prime Minister from the Barisan. He wants to have bilateral talks with me at 1.30pm. Doesn’t matter if I don’t eat.”

PKR says it can win Barisan’s stronghold

PKR leaders said today that voter sentiment still favours the opposition in Hulu Selangor despite a resurgent Barisan Nasional (BN) which holds all three state seats in the parliamentary constituency.

PKR president Datin Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail however noted that the Hulu Selangor seat was a “unique” one to contest since all three state seats were not opposition strongholds.

“(But) I think the mood is good,” she however told reporters after emerging from the party’s political bureau and supreme council back-to-back meetings here this evening.

In Election 2008, BN’s Mohd Isa Abu Kasim (Umno-Batang Kali), Datuk Mohamed Idris Abu Bakar (Umno-Hulu Bernam), and Wong Koon Mun (MCA-Kuala Kubu Baru) walked away as victors for their respective state seats while the late PKR MP Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad scored a surprising win of the parliamentary seat when he polled a slim 198-vote majority against MIC’s Datuk G. Palanivel.

Wan Azizah also coyly said “see what Barisan Nasional does first” when asked when the party planned to announce its chosen candidate.

“We will see when is the appropriate time to announce our candidate.

“Tengoklah BN dulu (wait for BN first),” she added, laughing.

When her husband, PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emerged from the meeting and was asked the same questions, he said, “Insyallah, we will work hard to win this.”

Earlier, PKR elections director Fuziah Salleh said that the total number of candidates on PKR’s list had now ballooned to “at least 12” names, from the original five who were at first suggested.

“We have continued to receive more. And this is a good thing because it shows that people have confidence in us and are willing to contest on the PKR ticket.

“It is unlike before when it was so hard to find candidates,” she said.

Fuziah added that the list would only be finalised during the political bureau meeting next Wednesday and the name of the selected nominee might be announced then.

“But I cannot say for certain now because we have agreed that this would be the prerogative of the president, the de facto leader and the special committee that is formed specifically for the vetting of the candidates,” she said.

The supreme council, added Fuziah, had agreed to leave the prerogative of selecting the by-election candidate to the special committee, which is expected to table the full list on Wednesday.

Fuziah also assured that the selection of candidate would not be based on the person’s race.

“The selection will be based on the candidate’s winnability factor and not the race. Race is not an issue here because we are looking at someone who can represent all races,” she said.

The Hulu Selangor seat fell vacant after its MP Zainal Abidin passed away due to a brain tumour.

There are 64,500 registered voters in Hulu Selangor, with 63,701 regular voters and 799 postal voters.
Of the total, the Malays make up the majority with 34,020 voters or 52.7 per cent. The next largest group is the Chinese with 16,964 voters (26.3 per cent), flowed by the Indians at 12,453 voters or 19.3 per cent.
