Ops Lalang: Dr M insists he met Kit Siang before crackdown

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has disputed Lim Kit Siang’s claim that he was re-writing history over events leading up to Ops Lalang — the mass detentions under the Internal Security Act (ISA) in 1987

This comes after the former prime minister was quoted in a new book by American journalist Tom Plate as saying he had met all opposition members before Ops Lalang and assured them they would not be arrested.

In a reaction to the book, Lim said in his blog on Wednesday that he had never met Dr Mahathir and the former prime minister never gave any assurances that the former would not be arrested .

“I met Kit Siang and his friends,” said Dr Mahathir in a press conference today when asked about Lim’s assertions.

The former prime minister has been criticised for using ISA during the crackdown which is widely regarded as a black mark on his legacy but today appeared to shift part of the responsibility for the arrests to the police.

“I thought they would not be detained but the police thought they were dangerous, that their actions were dangerous.

“The police took the action to detain them. I cannot counter their decision because I depend on the police for security. I had to accept it. This is the first time I ever told anybody about that,” he added.

Dr Mahathir claimed that Lim and the rest of the group were afraid they would be detained but he said that he felt detention was not warranted.

“In my opinion, they didn’t need to be detained,” he said. “But as the police are my security advisors, I could not just reject what they feel is important.”

Asked about why he kept Lim and others under ISA beyond the initial 60 day detention period if he did not feel they should have been detained in the first place, Dr Mahathir said that he could not reveal the reasons.

“They were released as soon as the police felt they should be released,” he said. “But what I talk to the police, I cannot tell the public even now.”

Asked about who else was with Lim when they had met, Mahathir simply replied: “I met them as a group”.

Following Mahathir’s remarks in the book titled ‘Dr M : Operation Malaysia — Conversations with Mahathir Mohamad’, Lim blogged that the now retired former Umno leader was “spinning untruths” and accused him of “passing the buck” to the police for the crackdown.

Lim said that “the personal, petty and vindictive nature in the misuse of the ISA” was highlighted by the fact that he and his son Lim Guan Eng were the last to be released from detention.

“Mahathir cannot shirk responsibility by passing the buck to the police,” said Lim. “He must come clean and apologise for masterminding Ops Lalang, the darkest chapter of human rights in Malaysia.”

If Kit Siang and Karpal were wrongly arrested by Hanif and the police, then why did Mahathir, as Home Minister, sign the 2 year detention order?

We know who is clearly sufferimg from "selective amnesia" and it sure ain't Kit Siang and Karpal. What bare-face brazen fibbing!

Sorry, i dont believe ur words...

U have both the power to capture & release them using ISA & even they are capture wrongly by ISA... But did u release them ASAP? Or waited?

Confirm. The old man has just been confirmed as senile and have loss of memory. Malaysians would wonder if the person need to be checked by doctor whether he is sane or not.

Perkasa calls on Ekuinas to buy Bumi shares so that companies remain in Bumi hands

Datuk Ibrahim Ali, the president of Malay rights group Perkasa said that the movement is suggesting that EKUINAS (Ekuiti Nasional Berhad) to buy the shares of the 5 Bumiputera companies which will be public listed soon as announced by prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. Ibrahim Ali said that this would ensure that the Bumiputera companies would continue to remain the hands of Bumiputeras. He also applauded the recent launch of Teraju and hoped that the new unit will also help the smaller Bumiputera companies.

He said “Yes, out of RM52 billion Bumiputera shares, now there is only RM2 billion (still accounted for); I am also upset, but there is Ekuinas now. The government can ensure that those shares can only be sold to Ekuinas. Such intervention would match the criteria for affirmative action that Perkasa has been fighting for. This is what we call affirmative action or guided economy. We thank the prime minister for his decision. We don’t want to interfere in Teraju, we will wait for the results,”

Pakatan leaders overstayed, they should learn Egypt lesson and step down soon – Utusan

Umno owned newspaper Utusan Malaysia has hit out again at the opposition front PR (Pakatan Rakyat) again where the daily said that the leaders of the component parties in Pakatan, namely Lim Kit Siang, the DAP senior leader, Datuk NikAziz Nik Mat, the spiritual leader of PAS and Karpal Singh, the national chairman of DAP have all overstayed their welcome and that they should learn the Egypt lesson where the leader President Hosni Mubarak who has been in power for 30 years have been called by the people to step down.

Datuk Zaini Hassan, the assistant editor-in-chief of Utusan hit out at Lim, Karpal as well as opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for ‘passing down’ power to their family members. He wrote “In my time in journalism covering politics and elections, when I was sent to Kelantan, I saw Nik Aziz Nik Mat as mentri besar after the 1990 election. Unfortunately, up to now, Nik Aziz is taking root in the seat. I’m sure if he’s sane, he will not contest in the next general election. Lim Kit Siang is still holding up the sky in DAP. The same with Karpal Singh. BN leaders should similarly not hold on to power for too long, and made a veiled reference to Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud who has governed the state since 1981, but did not name any of the ruling coalition’s leaders. There is a chief minister who has passed his 30th year in power (the same as Mubarak). Hasn’t he learned? I’m sure if he does, he will step down voluntarily and make way for the next level,”

Applauding former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad he said “He felt his mission was complete and so he stepped down” meanwhile, he criticized Kit Siang for pushing his son and daughter in law in potlics and “Karpal had also done the same by staying as chairman and giving seats to his sons, Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo and Datuk Keramat state assemblyman Jagdeep Singh Deo. Anwar Ibrahim who founded PKR has also given power to his wife and daughter. The result is PKR is nearly a failed party as many leaders have run away from the party,”

He added that “We hope that in the 13th general election, PM (Datuk Seri) Najib Razak, as Umno president and BN chairman, will present young faces who are competent and have quality to contest for state assembly seats. Let them take over the administration of states and be mentri besar, just as Najib was MB at a young age before. Malaysia was now full of young and educated people, and questioned whether they were being allowed to take up positions in parties that are in power. Has there been any efforts to attract them or not as others who have held on to those positions are trying to protect their own supporters?”

Perkasa only out to protect BN’s crony - Guan Eng

Lim Guan Eng, the Chief Minister of Penang has hit out at Malay rights group Perkasa for attempting to protect crony politics for the BN (Barisan Nasional) instead of calling for action against corruption. He said that Perkasa has been selectively silent on recent issues where they have not made any comments on the failure of the government in resolving the Maika Holdings scandal, the PKFZ (Port Klang Free Zone) fiasco both belonging to MIC and MCA respectively. Perkasa also did not say anything on the missing RM52billion Bumiputera shares.

He said “Worse, is the biggest scandal reported by the US-based financial watchdog Global Financial Integrity (GFI) that illegal money outflows from Malaysia for the period 2000-2008 topped US$291 billion or RM888 billion. RM888 billion exiting the country over a nine-year period was equivalent to four times the national budget in 2011, and warned that failure by BN to “come clean” will only result in greater losses and possible bankruptcy in future. It appeared as though Perkasa was as influential as the ruling coalition, given the Malay rights group’s ability to “censor” key provisions in the Najib administration’s New Economic Model (NEM). What difference is BN from Perkasa when Perkasa can exercise such strong influence to completely sabotage the NEM? BN’s kowtowing to Perkasa’s demands showed up 1 Malaysia as an empty slogan that does not embrace the future but will drag Malaysia backwards with “fears and threats” instead.”

These Umnoised Malays will never believe the truth but prefer to accept lies put out by Umno. Many of them hold degrees up to Phd's from very questionable universities. Those who have gone to Yale and Harvard have only attended 3 month courses and unashamedly claim to have degree qualifications. An attendance degree and a fully earned degree are two different things. One is given to politically sponsored attendees and other a genuine one is earned by hard work.
So what do you expect from Umno moulded degree holders.Ask them to sit down and debate with you on any topic and you will know what I mean.

Penang’s success made by BN, not Pakatan – Dr Koh Tsu Koon

Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department said that the achievements enjoyed by the state of Penang were due to the BN (Barisan Nasional)’s administration before the PR (Pakatan Rakyat) took over power. Dr Koh was the Chief Minister of Penang before the last general election when Gerakan lost badly and subsequently handed administration of the state to Pakatan Rakayt now led by Lim Guan Eng.

He said “Health tourism has developed here since 1996 through the state and federal government’s establishing co-operation in this area with Indonesia. As a result, Penang has been receiving the highest number of tourists in this sector. This does not happen only now but since then (1990s). The previous state government under his leadership had provided a strong foundation and platform for the present state government to manage the state.”

LGE won Penang fair & square...Penang people voted for him....unlike bn/umngoks who STOLE Perak from her people who voted for PR to rule Perak.

KTK rule Penang for 18 years and every year was a deficit for him. When DAP took over there was a surplus of rm88 million and rm77 million the second year....so it's clear that PR have a better management team. period.

If bn/umno is fair and just, pls resolve the Perak DUN and call for an election.....but i don't think they have the balls to do that...ha ha ha.

True 1Malaysia reflected in Ops Piramid - PM

The prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has showered praise for everyone involved in the recent Ops Piramid which is a rescue mission to evacuate the students and Malaysians stranded in Egypt in light of the recent demonstrations and protests there. He said that the mission was a success and everyone had rallied behind the cause irrespective of their race and religion and this was the very spirit of 1Malaysia.

He said “The Government decided that whatever the circumstances, we would launch a mission to rescue all Malaysians there. There was no political interest, as long as they were our people, our mission was to save them. Deputy Foreign Minister A. Kohilan Pillay risked his life to see that Malaysians were evacuated safely while his colleague Datuk Richard Riot Jaem helped out from Wisma Putra. We are also touched with the commitment given by (AirAsia group chief executive officer Datuk Seri) Tony Fernandes to fly the students out of Egypt and back to Malaysia. Everyone, no matter what their religion and race, was concerned about the safety of their fellow Malaysians and wanted to do their bit to help. This is truly the 1Malaysia spirit,”

Fuel price hikes not yet decided, says minister

The government has no plan yet to raise petrol and diesel prices despite global crude oil prices going over US$$100 (RM304.45) a barrel due to Egypt turmoil.

Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the Cabinet had not discussed the fuel price hike.

“The government does not raise fuel prices at its whim and fancy as a thorough study had to be conducted first before a decision is made,” he told reporters at the Bera parliamentary constituency’s Chinese New Year open house in Triang near here today.

Ismail Sabri, who is also MP for Bera, said based on prevailing situation, crude oil prices would continue to escalate, thereby putting undue pressure on government subsidies.

“Egypt turmoil pushes crude oil price over US$100 a barrel as Egypt is also an oil producer, thus affecting the world’s oil production,” he added.

He said the government provided subsidies amounting to RM6.3 billion for petrol and diesel last year.

6 billion a year, fuel subsidy for malaysians, an oil producing country, are peanuts. How much do the malaysian politicians and cronies get in a year?

A Lesson from Tenang, MCLM and Malay Voter's Mindset

In a direct response to the PKR recently concluded party elections, the "Third Force" headed by Raja Petra Kamaruddin and Haris Ibrahim formed what we have come to know now as MCLM-"Malaysian Civil Liberties Movement"

You can read their agenda and programs by clicking on the name above.

My only question is, based on the recently concluded Tenang by elections, how does an organization like MCLM can make themselves attractive to the Malay electorate? Can someone like HAris Ibrahim command the respect and support of the Malay voters in a constituency like Tenang?

The Malays are paranoid when it comes to Malay rights. PAS tried to be ambivalent. They adopted a "clean campaign" free from mud slinging and bad mouthing tactics.

Most importantly, PAS decided not to play the "Malay Issue". Whatever issued that was played, it was either related to PAS's candidate's credibility (which is head above shoulders compared to that of UMNO's) or national issue which cuts across the race barrier. No Malay issues was played throughout the campaign.

As for UMNO, in addition to the lies, falsehood and slanders they threw at the PAS candidate and leaders, they went beserk playing the race card. Everything that came out from their mouth is nothing more than the dangers that Malays faced with the DAP coming into power in the form of Pakatan Rakyat.

When the ballots were counted, granted that UMNO only increased their tally by 332 votes (close to 2% of votes casted), they managed to keep the Malay votes they received in 2008 intact.

They lost on the CHinese and a bit on the Indian votes but then again most of the Chinese voters could not come out to vote because of the floods. The rescue boats were the sole use for ferrying UMNO voters.

So, UMNO can boast that they have managed to keep Malay voters from shifting sides. THe effect of tsunami 2008 on the Maly electorate has been mitigated. Now, they can move towards getting the Chinese and Indian votes.

My question to MCLM is that: What contribution can you bring forth in order to gain increase the Malay tally for Pakatan Rakyat (or against BN)?

This topic may point out to whether MCLM is really relevant to the current Malaysian political scenario.

Lee Kuan Yew should be held under ISA – S’pore Malays group

The PKMS (Singapore Malay National Organisation), a Singaporean Malay group has called for the former prime minister of the country Lee Kuan Yew to be detained under the ISA (Internal Security Act) after his latest remarks in his book “Lee Kuan Yew: Hard Truths to Keep Singapore Going” which called on the Muslims in Singapore to be less ‘observant’ about their religious practices for the good of the development of the country.

Mohamed Nazem Suki, the secretary-general of the movement said “Is Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s (picture) statement not distorting and inciting racial and religious disharmony? The book was a “subversive document” and asked that Lee be detained under the ISA that “Mr Lee championed (yet) breached openly and disrespectfully.” May we advise the President... that the ISA provision be applied to Mr Lee Kuan Yew and he be detained and be further investigated for such subversive acts. No Singaporeans shall be allowed immunity if he has committed an offence under the Sedition Act. Lee lacked respect for the nation’s constitution and questioned his intentions in writing the book. Is it Mr Lee’s intent to discriminate, degrade and denounce a particular race or religion? Why are his statements of prejudice and suspicion towards our Asean counterparts?”

Umno no longer about Malay’s struggles but only about APs and contracts

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the former prime minister of Malaysia hit out at his party Umno, the largest component party of the ruling coalition BN (Barisan Nasional) where he accused the party for no longer standing for the struggles of the Malay community and instead the party is all about contracts, APs and licenses. He said that Umno must look back on its struggle and return to its original fight which is to unite the Malay community which he claims is divided.

He said “We can unite the Malays if we are willing to work hard and explain that Umno’s struggle is for religion, race and country. Umno will not change if the members do not do their part in ensuring the party was clean of corruption, saying graft will destroy the community and hinder the country from progressing. The concept of Malay supremacy was meaningless if the community continues to be easily bought. Hang Tuah said that Malays will never vanish from the face of the earth but what type of Malays that will never disappear? Drivers? Drain cleaners? Coolies? They are also Malays. If this is the type of Malays we want then it is okay. We will just tell Hang Tuah sorry,”

Claiming also that the current ‘divisiveness’ of the Malays were the faults of PKR de factor leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, he added that “Both leaders were willing to use religion and politics for personal interest instead of the interest of the Malays. If he (Anwar) wants to go to Putrajaya then we can give him a car so he can go. Nik Aziz is an opportunist as he willing to do anything for power. The Malays can only progress and determine their own future if they remain united.”
