Government ends “Vehicle End Of Life Policy”

Bernama reported that government has decided to put an end on the newly announced “Vehicle End Of Life Policy” under National Automotive Policy (NAP) after receiving feedback and responses from the public.

The newly announced policy requires vehicles over 15 years to be tested for roadworthiness in order to renew their road tax. However, ever since it was announced officially last October 28, government has been receiving negative responses from the public.

Therefore, government decided to pull back the initial plan to have these vehicles to be inspected to get road tax renewal

Spring cleaning for PAS

PAS president Hadi Abdul Awang said the door is closed for any discussion on the so-called unity government and PAS will not bring up the issue again at any of its meetings.

On Saturday, more than 1,000 delegates will gather at the PAS field headquarters in Taman Melewar, Gombak for a political seminar aimed at “putting the house in order.”

The party had been in such a mess that spiritual advisor Nik Aziz Nik Mat called for an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to resolve the problems.

However, the party’s central committee, which met on Oct 28, ruled that an EGM is not necessary and opted, instead, for a seminar that could spell clearly what the problems are that the party is facing.

International Islamic University of Malaysia law lecturer Prof Dr Abdul Aziz Bari will be the guest speaker at the seminar, and is expected to present his views on what the future holds for PAS in the context of its relations with the PKR and the DAP; it’s partners in the Pakatan Rakyat alliance.

A main agenda at the seminar is the Selangor liaison committee, which had neither been on good terms with its Pakatan allies at the state level nor had been amicable with their own leaders at the PAS headquarters.

Three problematic leaders

Nik Aziz accused Selangor PAS head Hassan Ali of being aligned to Umno and named him one of the three problematic leaders in PAS that have to be dealt with. The other two are deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa and secretary-general Mustafa Ali.

A committee has been set up, headed by vice-president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, to probe into the management of Selangor PAS.

He is expected to give his findings at the seminar, together with a stack of solutions to the matter.hadi awang 2.jpg

An earlier issue of discontent – the formation of a goodwill government with Umno – was quickly set aside and will not be brought up at the seminar.

No more unity talks

PAS president Hadi Abdul Awang said the door is closed for any discussion on the so-called unity government and PAS will not bring up the issue again at any of its meetings.

Nik Aziz had wanted the EGM to be held as he wanted a referendum on the three alleged problematic leaders instead of having to go through bureaucratic procedures to remove them from PAS.

He wrote in his blog: “Umno has decided on issues through an EGM and, likewise, the MCA too was able to hold an EGM for a vote of no confidence in their president and deputy president.

“It was the same with PKR, which amended their constitution through a special congress. Why not us?

“Our issue involved only two or three leaders who give problems.

“Even the Indian community is not afraid to oppose (MIC president S) Samy Vellu by forming new parties.

“So, what is so strange about calling for an emergency meeting or an extraordinary assembly?”

The Kelantan mentri besar said his proposal for an EGM stemmed from reading an article by Dr Abdul Aziz Bari, which said the poor showing of PAS in the Bagan Pinang by-election was influenced by the disarray in Selangor PAS and criticisms against Hadi’s leadership of the party.

Nik Aziz also criticised

Ironically, Nik Azis was also not spared of criticisms about his dealing of certain issues and his idea of the EGM.

However, before things got out of control, Hadi called for calm and reminded his members that any internal fighting should be kept where it rightly should be – inside the party – and not to be debated in the mainstream media or the new media.

He advocated the ‘musyuarah’ (consensus) approach to dealing with the internal conflicts which, he said, was the culture and style of PAS that has been enshrined in its constitution.

“I make this plea to all members and leaders at all levels, to be patient and calm in facing these internal challenges at this time,” he told his centeral committee members, when suggesting the proposed EGM be replaced by a political seminar.

Nik Aziz did not object, but he gave his personal views on the issues troubling him.
Saturday’s seminar, in essence, will be a watered-down version of Nik Aziz’s EGM but it is expected to get the delegates rallying behind Hadi and giving him a re-energised authority to take the party to its next level…whatever it is that he decides.

If Hasan Ali is a pro-Umno stooge, what about the rest of the PAS people in Selangor that wholly supported him?

In every house-hold there are rubbish and once in a little while some cleaning has to be done before the whole house stink. Whether in DAP PAS or PKR rubbish must be thrown out. No party is 100% clean. If the leader is clean the party will follow and if the party stink.... It is high time that those having stupid ideas and want to stab their people on the back must be thrown out the faster the better. Tok Guru you are truly a man of God. Though we are of different religion but you are still a very well respected religious man to me. Not like so many so called holy people. If Pas is under you there will be peace in the party. May God bless you more and more.

My record is almost perfect – claims Dr Koh

Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department has hit out at his critics for claiming that he is only present at the Dewan Rakyat when the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is present. Otherwise he is usually absent. Dr Koh said that he will not be distracted with such allegations and that he has nothing to hide and has been attending the sitting everyday since June. He said "My record is almost perfect except for one day. I was absent only one day. So, this allegation that I only came whenever the prime minister came, is not true. The prime minister has endorsed not just to me but all his ministers. I think that is important,"

This came in light when Datuk Mohamad Aziz, the BN MP of Sri Gading called on Dr Koh to quit his post and that he is usually present only when the Prime Minister is around. He also called on Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat to quit as the people do not want him anymore.

On calls that he is not suitable to be the president of Gerakan, he said "Whatever happened in the last general election, yes we lost, but in political life, we have lost people. Even Lim Kit Siang and Karpal Singh have lost many times,"

MRR2 is so safe, I won’t be around to see it last – Works Minister

Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor, the Works Minister told the parliament today that the flyovers in the country, including the MRR2 (Middle Ring Road 2) were all designed to last at least 100 years and that the MRR2 is safe for travelling. He said “I might not be around to see it last but based on the ultimate design, the main structure can last for such a period. However, there are things beyond anybody’s control like a natural disaster. In Mississippi in the United States, for example, a very strong bridge collapsed. But as far as the MRR2 in our country (is concerned), there are only cracks,” Tan Seng Giaw, the DAP representative of Kepong questioned Shaziman on the safety of the MRR2 and to assure that as claimed by his predecessor Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu that the MRR2 could last 100 years.

Shaziman said “The Government can take action against contractors of the project and it was up to the contractor to take similar action against the consultant. The MRR2 was a ‘design and build’ project and the Government can only take action against the contractor. It is up to the contractor to brief those involved and decide whatever action to take,” The Works Ministry came under fire recently for the cracks found along the MRR2 after millions of Ringgit were spent to upkeep and repair its flyovers.

Spotted: Toyol in Kuala Lumpur

Hundreds of citizens in Taman Pinggiran USJ1, Kuala Lumpur were shocked to learn that a curly-haired ‘toyol’ had the ability to climb walls before breaking into private residences via rooftop and run away with the money robbed from the houses during prayers time.

The suspect clad in short pants wasn’t afraid to break-in to a house even when the residents are home.
Taman Pinggiran USJ1 neighbourhood association chief Badleesham Zainal Abdin said the suspect’s deed were exposed when one of the residents managed to capture his crime via surveillance security cameras (CCTV) installed behind the house.

According to the source, the Indonesian suspect has been breaking into houses numerous times targeting four residences located along Jalan 1/6 and 1/7 between 7.10 pm to 8 pm yesterday. The video surveillance camera revealed that the suspect was climbing a two-storey terrace house from the back before crawling to the rooftop.

The suspect then removed part of the pantile roofs to slip into the house. He added that the suspect would usually jump from the ceiling before entering one of the rooms. Initial investigations revealed that he spent around five minutes per unit before moving on to the next target.

Police suspected that he climbed out of the house due to lack of valuable items such as cash or jewelries. He then moved to the next property and break into the house 15 minutes later. Suspect managed to grab RM100 from the first two burglaries before applying the same tactic on other houses.

Surprisingly, the suspect did not use ropes or other items to help him climb up and down the walls. Instead, he stepped on the pumps in the toilet to get out of the property. Even though his actions were captured on film, CCTV failed to get his clear picture. Realizing the existence of CCTV, the suspect covered his face with hands.

The only clues left behind are his physical appearance with curly hair; clad in short pants and black and white slippers. Based on the evidence from CCTV and co-operation from residents, authorities have arrested a foreigner to assist in the investigation.

Second post mortem for Teoh Beng Hock

Coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas today gave the go-ahead for deceased political secretary Teoh Beng Hock's body to be exhumed for a second post mortem to be conducted by a nominated medical officer with the assistance of prominent Thai forensic pathologist Dr Porntip Rojanasunand.

In granting the request from Teoh's family, Azmil also ordered the presence of the two government doctors who had conducted the first post mortem as well as a pathologist appointed by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) as observers.

Teoh's family had initially wanted Rojanasunand to personally conduct the second post mortem but that bid ran into legal complications since the Thai doctor was not certified by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC), employed at a local medical institution, or the recepient of academic qualifications that received exemptions under the Medical Act 1971.

Counsel for the Teoh family, Gobind Singh Deo, yesterday acknowledged that it would be difficult for Rojanasunand to comply with the legal requirements "in a short period of time" to enable her to personally conduct the procedure.

Gobind then requested that Rojanasunand be allowed to supervise the second post mortem and direct further investigations of particular areas, if necessary.

He also requested that Rojanasunand be recalled to court to present her findings and the new post mortem report.

Rojanasunand, who was engaged by the Selangor state government, had indicated that she would be available to oversee the second post mortem on Nov 14, Gobind said.

The Selangor state government's counsel Malik Imtiaz Sarwar, in supporting the application, reminded the court that this case was of public interest and forensic value.

"It's obvious to all that it is a matter of public interest, not only because of the nature of death but the nature of the case. There have been contradicting positions by pathologists that have come to court to give evidence," Malik said.

Malik also noted that Rojanasunand said Teoh's body could still be examined despite having been buried for over three months.

MACC's legal affairs and prosecutions director Datuk Abdul Razak Musa and lawyer Tan Hock Chuan, who is leading the attorney-general's team in assisting the coroner, did not raise objections to the exhumation application.

The Teoh family filed the exhumation application at the Shah Alam High Court on Oct 27 after Rojanasunand's explosive testimony where she suggested the possibility of Teoh having been assaulted and unconscious before falling to his death.

In her Oct 21 testimony, Rojanasunand noted several injuries on Teoh's body, which she said were consistent with injuries from manual strangulation, beating and anal penetration.

Rojanasunand , the director-general of the Thai Ministry of Justice's Central Institute of Forensic Science, also said there was an "80% probability of homicide and 20% probability of suicide" in the unresolved case.

Rojanasunand's earlier evidence was based on the first post mortem as well as photographs taken during the autopsy and at the scene where Teoh's body was found.

The first autopsy on Beng Hock was performed on July 17 by Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Klang's senior consultant pathologist Dr Khairul Azman Ibrahim and Universiti Malaya Medical Centre pathologist Dr Prashant Naresh Samberkar.

Beng Hock's body was found on July 16 on a fifth floor landing at the Plaza Masalam, near an office block that houses the Selangor MACC office.

The 30-year-old aide to Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah was earlier at the MACC's office for overnight interrogation having been identified as a witness in the anti-graft body's probe into alleged misappropriation of funds by several Pakatan Rakyat assemblymen.

Details regarding the proposed medical officer to conduct the post mortem, date and location will be determined when the inquest resumes on Nov 9.

Gobind later told reporters he was considering Serdang Hospital given that it was closest to Semenyih, where Beng Hock's body was laid to rest on July 20.

When asked, Gobind said the family, at this point in time, had not shortlisted potential doctors to conduct the post mortem.

"Preparations will have to be made. We respect that there are religious and cultural issues involved [in the exhumation]," Gobind said.

CSI crookies,Watch and learn from the renown expert. Don't try to make wild assumptions again and then made to look like morons from the expert's comments or findings. The rakyat already know how 'good' you guys really are!Don't bother to 'impress' either, please !

we know the Malaysian docs need to cover their ass, so they should be very helpful to Khunying Dr.Pornthip and let her make all the conclusions. at least this way, they save their professional reputation. it would be great if they can agree with her but that is asking for too much.

Whatever, let us first congratulate The Coroner, Azmil Muntapha, for his courageous decision to allow the 2nd post mortem. He has in fact done a very big face saving for the legal service and the Government whose reputations have totally been destroyed by the MACC and two Govt doctors.

No change in postal voting system

There will be change in the postal voting system for the uniform bodies consisting of the police and armed forces. According to Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, the governments has no such plans to review or change the system. He said “The Election Commission does allow representatives of parties that contest in a particular election to witness the voting process to ensure it was carried out in a fair and transparent manner.

The Commission feels that the postal voting system is still relevant in accordance with election procedures,” Nazri was answering the questions posted by the Pengkalan Chepa PAS M, Datuk Abdul Halim Abdul Rahman where he added that “There were 2.5 million names of deceased voters in the electoral list, saying the Commission updates the electoral list every six months, according to the list of deceased voters provided by the National Registration Department. The status of wives of police and armed forces personnel would also remain in the current capacity since the EC does not intend to change their status to normal voters. If the wife lives with her husband who is on duty in Sarawak but registered as a voter in Pengkalan Chepa, it does not make sense for her to return to Pengkalan Chepa to vote, since it involves cost, logistics and other matters,

Federal Govt will give ‘compassionate payment’ to Kelantan as oil royalty

The Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, said that the government will be paying a compassionate fund or wang ehsan to the Kelantan State government as the form of oil royalty. He said “The payment, which would be in the form of development programmes for the state and its poor, would begin next year. The allotment of wang ehsan to Kelantan would take into consideration the production and sale of petroleum from the Bumi Selatan field. The allotment would be channeled after a detailed report about the sum of gas produced and the procedure is finalised.

The first allocation of wang ehsan for Kelantan is expected in 2010,” he said during the question and answer session.” He was answering the inquiry by the Kubang Kerian PAS representative Salahuddin Ayub on when the oil royalty will be paid to the state. Najib said “In order for the allocation to be beneficial to all Kelantanese, the money would be channeled in the form of programmes for development and to combat poverty. The projects would be carried out by the Federal Government after negotiating with the state government. This decision reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that people from all walks of life enjoy the benefits of the country’s development. From a legal aspect, states such as Terengganu and Kelantan are only entitled to oil royalties if the petroleum is drilled from its waters. The offshore oil operations in their waters are defined as an area not more than three nautical miles, which is measured starting from the low watermark or the shoreline of the state. Currently, there is no oil production in the waters of Kelantan or Terengganu. Because of that, from the legal standpoint, Kelantan does not have a right to demand oil royalties, the same as Terengganu

Chua reinstated as Deputy President of MCA, Liow reverted to VP

The MCA reinstated Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek as the deputy president after the Central Committee unanimously agreed after the ROS (Registrar of Societies) declared the legitimacy of the post to Chua. This means that Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai is now reverted back as the vice-president of the party. The party’s president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said “The CC concurred with the reason given by the ROS.

The CC meeting accepted the ROS' decision that the post of deputy president is still held by Chua Soi Lek. As such, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai will resume his post as vice-president," Liow on the other hand wants to appeal and believe that he is still the deputy president. He said that "The MCA now has twin deputy presidents. I hereby reserve the right to challenge the decision of the ROS, I also reserve my right to go to the court to challenge the declaration,"

Saiful’s father tells Anwar to stop delaying and face sodomy charges

Azlan Mohd Lazim, the father of Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, the alleged sodomy victim of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has challenged the opposition leader to stop delaying the case and to face the charges set on him. Azlan said “Anwar had been making statements, claiming that the case against him should be dropped because there was no evidence. If there was no evidence, why is he going up and down the court appealing and re-appealing for documents and DNA samples?” The Court of Appeal will be sitting on Friday to decide if Anwar gets the documents and DNA samples used in the case for him to prepare for his defence while Anwar had also applied for the charge to be struck out. Azlan said that he is not surprised if Anwar attempts to delay the case for a longer period.

Datuk K S Nallakarupan has called on her former friend PKR President Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to listen to Ezam Mohd Nor, the former youth chief of the party and sack Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his ‘immoral’ acts and to stop covering Anwar’s weaknesses. Nallakarupan said “She should put a stop to it. I agree with Ezam. Ezam knows Wan Azizah well. Other¬wise, he would not be challenging her.” This came in light recently when Ezam, who was a former aide of Anwar himself said that “Wan Azizah was willing to cover up Anwar’s weaknesses for her family’s sake but at the expense of the party and the rakyat." Ezam also called on Wan Azizah to quit her post and told Anwar to “stop hiding behind Wan Azizah’s skirt”.

Nallakarupan also said “Wan Azizah should be given the best actress award for being able to play the same script for the past 12 years and people still believe her. If she chooses to ignore Ezam’s challenge, the public can draw their own conclusion at the game the 3As (Anwar, Azizah and Azmin Ali, PKR vice-president) are playing,

Don’t do it again – Muhyiddin advises wrong doers in A-G report

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, the deputy prime minster reminded civil servants in the government departments and agencies to not allow the wrongdoings and irregularities in the Auditor-General’s report for 2008 to repeat and that the criticisms will all be useless if they do not take them seriously. Muhyiddin said “These were not the usual criticisms but were reminders that had been made time and again. If these criticisms that have been raised so often are still repeated now in the latest report, the people may say that we are not serious, that this important Auditor-General's report is not given attention, giving the impression that the government does not consider the views of the team that we know is constantly monitoring our work and annual reports,"

He added that “Serious action must be taken because repeated wrongdoings showed that the parties concerned did not give due attention to their work and thus ignored the set rules and regulations. Maybe no specific action was taken against the agency, department or individual who committed the wrongdoing, hence the criticisms keep on appearing in the audit reports. He said the National Key Result Areas (NKTA) and the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) introduced recently were a challenge that must be met to give more focus to achieve the targets quickly. This was not an easy thing to do but it was doable if a new paradigm shift was achieved through concerted high commitment, cooperation among all parties and the willingness of the officers to serve whole-heartedly.”

Don't do it again..just like that after billions have been stolen?Puhleez, go fly a kite, u black pimpled moron.

Don't do it again........boys...............Rubbish statements from another dud.Fire them out of civil service........now.

No more excuses...........no more waste.............BUCK UP Govt.

What the fcuk?

When killed Altantuya, Don't murder again. That is it.... Altantuya will come back again.

RAKYAT WANT TO SEE THESE PEOPLE RESIGNED AND JAILED!

Judgement day! Punishment for these culprits!

I don't think it will be the same result if you find the opposition making these crimes. they will immediately ISA-ed without reason until they can "create" such evidence.

If this is the type of response coming from the No.2 man in the country, then those govt. servants who have never commited any corruption before will commit corruption. If they are lucky they are going to walk away smiling to the bank. But if they are caught, they can still walk away scot free becos the DPM will then say "'never mind this time but don't do it again""

What a brainy DPM we have. You know what folks?. If those wrong doers are punished, BN will lose its supporters in the next election. So for DPM and his gang to stay on and continue squandering peoples hard earned money, DPM has no choice but to say something to show that he is very concerned.

What Bullshit?

MACC and police carried duties fairly, impossible for Pakatan to be free of corruption - Nazri

Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department defended the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) and the Police that they have carried out their duties without fear of factor of race or politics. He was responding to a question by Salahuddin Ayub, the PAS rep of Kubang Kerian where he said that the 2 forces are not ‘selective’ when it comes to prosecution and that everyone are treated equally. He said “Up to January 2009, 12 politicians from Barisan Nasional were arrested compared to one from Pakatan Rakyat. So why are you accusing us of being selective? Is it possible to arrest 100 percent politicians from BN although they did not commit any offence to prove that we are not selective?"

He also slammed the Pakatan where he said that it is impossible for Pakatan to be free from corruption but the stated that the MACC is colour-blind when it comes to discharging their duties. He said "MACC is colour-blind when it comes to their investigations... but to say that Pakatan is free from corruption, that is quite impossible,"

Questions over ex-mufti's arrest

Former Perlis mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, who was detained by officers of the Selangor Islami Affairs Department (JAIS) early Monday morning, has since been released on a police bond.

Questions, howevasri-syariah-case-5.jpger, have surfaced on why he was arrested,

- What was the motive of the arrest?

- Who was behind the arrest or who had ordered it?

- If he was not a 'recognised' speaker, who would be the one deciding on his status?

- What about those who took part in the arrest? Were they qualified, with regards to religious eligibility, to carry out the arrest?

- Was it a move to 'sabotage' his position as president of the national Islamic missionary foundation, Yayasan Dakwah Islam Malaysia?

- Are there any personal grievances between the raiding officers and Asri?

PM said Federal govt not involved

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said the mufti’s arrest had nothing to do with the Federal government.

“I don’t know what the motive of the arrest is. It was done by the state religious agency. It has nothing to do with the Federal Government,” he told reporters on Monday after launching a pasar tani (farmers’ bazaar) convention here.

Najib considered Dr Asri as a “truthful speaker” whose talks were backed by proof and clear dalil (examples of Quranic and Hadith exhortations).

PAS said JAIS' action on Dr Asri was ‘unprofessional’ and alleged that the department officers had misused their authority.

nasrudin-hassan-2.pngPAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hasan Tantawi said the movement regretted the JAIS decision to detain the former mufti, who was picked up at a house in Taman Sri Ukay, near here, after he delivered a religious ceramah on Sunday night.

Youth movements regret action

"I regret that JAIS had done this. It could do better, like conducting anti-vice raids throughout the state,” Nasrudin said in his blog.

“If official recognition is the issue, JAIS could gather all dakwah speakers, conduct interviews with them and give the certificates .. if that, indeed is the procedure to take,” he added.

“It’s bad when the target is a well-known speaker who has already got the credentials in the religious fields and the recognition had also come from a university that is famous for awarding BAs, MAs and PhDs in the field," said Nasrudin

He said PAS Youth was prepared to meet JAIS officials to discuss the issues of Asri’s arrest and the spreading Islamic missionary without a so-called tauliah.

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said the movement was also ‘shocked’ on learning about Asri’s arrest.

“I hope he will be given the appropriate defence and justice, especially when Asri himself had been so cooperative that a warrant of arrest need not be issued," he said.

Writing in his blog, the Rembau MP questioned the legitimacy of making the arrest even though the former mufti is known to sometimes make controversial comments.

Why now and not before?

“If it was because of his talk, why arrest him now? He has delivered so many speeches and shared his thoughts and comments many times before this; whether through his blog or in the newspaper columns that he writes,” Khairy said.

He added: “I hope this is not one of those ‘selected detentions’ that was provoked by people who don’t like him or instigated by some political elements.

The reason for his arrest is not immediately known.

Dr Asri and his supporters had gathered at the Gombak Timur Lower Syaria court Monday morning but he was not charged. He was only issued a police bond as a notice for JAIS enforcement officers to question him at a later date.

There were no JAIS officers present.

“I dont understand why I have been treated like this. I am a former mufti. I have a PhD in Islamic studies from the International Islamic Universiti. I tutor PhD and Masters’ students in my classes (at Universiti Science Malaysia). Why am I being treated like this?”

“I hope this becomes a point for the Government to amend the laws for better human rights and more freedom of speech,” he told reporters after being issued the bond.

Despite waiting nearly three hours at the court, the prominent Islamic scholar said he has not been informed of the charge that JAIS plans to file against him.

It is, however, expected that he would be charged under Section 119 of the Selangor Islamic Administration Enactment for preaching without state permission (tauliah) at the private house in Taman Sri Ukay., Gombak to a crowd of 500 friends and relatives on Sunday night.

Among them were Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin and Hulu Kelang state assemblyman Saari Sungib.

They were also among those who gathered at the courthouse, including Titiwangsa MP Dr Lo’ Lo’ Mohamad Ghazali, Sisters In Islam board member Zainah Anwar and social activist Marina Mahathir.asri-syariah-case-1.jpg

Dr Asri told reporters that the authorities did not take his statement but only his personal particulars. He was ordered to present himself at court.

Support at the courthouse

Several people who were at the ceramah said the situation at the house during the arrest was tense and reminiscent of the arreset of Anwar Ibrahim at the former deputy prime minister’s hopuse on Damansara in 1998.

Zuraida called for calm and not cause any disturbance while the enforcement officers did their job.

At about 2am, several policemen and Dr Asri were seen talking and the former mufti then agreed to make a statement at a police station. He was seen being escorted into a Jais van

Hours before his arrest, the former mufti told the media that he was giving a week to the Syarie Lawyers Association of Malaysia (PGSM) to provide proof that he had insulted renowned 'ulama' (learned scholars) among them being Imam Nawawi, Imam Bukhari and Imam Ghazali.

Challenge to syarie lawyers

Asri said he wanted to see for himself the writings and words that he was purportedly said to have used to insult these 'ulama'.

On Oct 12, PGSM had sent a memorandum to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin to withdraw Dr Asri's appointment as the head of the Yayasan Dakwah Islam Malaysia (Yadim), a national missionary foundation, on various charges of insulting the
Yesterday, Bernama also reported that Dr Mohd Asri gave a week to the Syariah Lawyers Association of Malaysia (PGSM) to provide proof that he had insulted renowned 'ulama' (learned men) among them being Imam Nawawi, Imam Bukhari and Imam Ghazali.

35 JAIS officers and 25 policemen to arrest an ex-mufti!!! Anyone in commando outfit and any snippers involved?

The plan is simple. JAIS arrests Asri. Then hero Najis comes to his rescue. All muslims clap hands and cheer the hero.

It is also a warning to Asri.

It is a clear warning to Dr Asri. You go with PAS you will suffer, you go with UMNO you will prosper. Let hope Dr Asri is strong enough to weather UMNO stick or carrot tricks.

The JAIS people responsible should be sacked for their incompetency, ignorance of the law and plain stupidity.

Perak graft trial: ‘Sex video’ viewed in court

The corruption trial of two former state executive council (exco) members from the Pakatan Rakyat saw the video clip showing sexual acts allegedly committed by one of the accused being viewed for the first time in open court.

On Oct 20, the clips were viewed in camera with the public gallery being cleared.

At the onset of the trial on Monday, Sessions judge Azhaniz Teh Azman Teh allowed the application by defence counsel S. Muthu to determine the identity of the person in the clip.

When judge Azhaniz Teh asked whether the gallery needed to be cleared, Muthu turned around to check with his client Zul Hassan, 45, who agreed to allow the clips be viewed by all in court.

Muthu then turned to reporters covering the case and said, “Are you happy now?”

Former PKR exco members Mohd Osman Mohd Jailu, 57, and Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi, 52, who are on trial, were seen joking with those in the gallery and offering them a better view of the clips.

Jointly charged with the two are former Perak Tengah district councillors Zul Hassan and Usaili Alias, 56, businessman Fairul Azrim Ismail, 31 and Perak Development Corporation technician Ruslan Sahat (now deceased).

The offences were allegedly committed to help Mohamad Imran obtain a RM180mil project at Seri Iskandar.

Later when cross-examined by Muthu, agent provocateur Mohamad Imran Abdullah, 34, said he could make out Zul Hassan in the clip although the lights in the room where the images were taken were dim.

Mohamad Imran, a businessman, said that he could recognise Zul Hassan as he had seen an earlier recording of him.

He agreed with Muthu that the images shown in the clip only showed half of the man’s face and his back.

Earlier in the morning, Mohamad Imran said Zul Hassan had never asked to be supplied with girls in the three meetings he (Mohamad Imran) had with him in return for securing the project.

Mohamad Imran also told the court that he was not aware of a plot by the then Anti-Corruption Agency to topple the Pakatan-led Perak state government.

He however agreed that the arrest of Mohd Osman and Jamaluddin had led to the collapse of the Pakatan government.

When cross-examined by Asri Othman, counsel for Fairul Azrim, Mohamad Imran said Ruslan was not arrested on two occasions despite him being given money by Mohamad Imran.

The hearing continues on Nov 4.

1Malaysia sendiwara at its best. The two joker already know the court will clear them of the charge. That why they can be seen laughing and smiling. The court will say not enough evidence. In Malaysia which court can go against the wish of the PM.

"Mohamad Imran also told the court that he was not aware of a plot by the then Anti-Corruption Agency to topple the Pakatan-led Perak state government."

Mohamad Imran,
Who the fcuk you think you are kidding?

Maybe you are not aware also that the people in MACC has a knack for watching child porn movie (and now producing porn movie too by entrapping opposition assemblymen)!

Huh..., there are so many porn actors in the BN now!

All this wayang kulit arranged by the BN government to cheat the public.

No court in Malaysia will dare to go against the wish of the PM or the BN government.

Why arrest Dr Asri?

It’s easy to speculate why Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin was arrested last night for preaching in Selangor without a permit.

A raft of reasons has already circulated, and even the maverick scholar alludes to hidden hands in his detention. Is it because he is closer to PAS than Umno? Or has it anything to do with Asri’s purported appointment as chief of Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Yadim)?

Perhaps because he is seen to be a Wahhabi, the austere and puritanical school of Islam practised in Saudi Arabia.

Perhaps he is too progressive for Muslim Malaysians?

Perhaps he is seen as a threat to other muftis?

After all, Asri is young and popular, gliding and mixing among the liberal Muslims and the political elite in Kuala Lumpur, despite his short stint as the Perlis mufti.

It could be for one or all of these reasons that Asri now finds himself on the wrong end of the Syariah law last night. His crime, ostensibly, is to have given lectures without authorisation — despite it being in a private house, and in a country where hundreds preach daily with or without similar “blessings” in houses, suraus, schools or mosques.

His greater crime is just being who he is — a maverick scholar who speaks about Islam without all the fluff. Perhaps like the Wahhabis who don’t even celebrate Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) birthday or consign their ruler to an unmarked grave upon his death.

Truth is, he has never been liked by his fellow muftis, who saw him as an upstart, not yet grey enough in the head or beard to be taken seriously. He is simple, direct and has a weblog; a superstar preacher shaking the authority of his peers.

Even the man ambivalent about the religious elite, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has taken a liking to Asri and has told him to remain bipartisan and equidistant among Muslims politicians divided between Umno and PAS.

But PAS has been courting Asri. And so has Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who has recommended him to head Yadim, the state-sponsored missionary group.

It is currently led by the PAS-turned-Umno man Datuk Mohd Nakhaie Ahmad, and his replacement — especially Asri — would be a boost for Umno’s Islamist credentials in the next general elections.

But the Syarie Lawyers Association (PGSM) has opposed Asri’s appointment on grounds he has defamed some of Islam’s illustrious imams, a charge the scholar has denied. He also appears to have rejected the Yadim appointment due to the blatant opposition towards him.

It well maybe that his arrest yesterday was for petty and private reasons related to Yadim, and old scores being settled now that he has returned from his post-graduate studies in the United Kingdom.

Many thought Asri would stay on in the West or return to teaching in Universiti Sains Malaysia. But his popularity and lectures among the capital elite has probably turned them green with envy.

And what better way to cut him down to size than by arresting him for the simple offence of preaching without a permit. After all, if a man can’t follow the law, can he be trusted to enforce the law?

Who knows?

What is clear is that baser instincts and motives govern those who enforce Islamic religious laws in Malaysia, making them as human as the ones they think are sinning against the faith and Allah.

Jais denies Asri’s arrest politically motivated

The Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) has strongly denied that Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin’s arrest last night was politically-motivated, saying that they are planning to charge the former Perlis mufti merely because he had broken the law.

Jais director Datuk Mohammed Khusrin Munawi told reporters that Asri was arrested under Section 119 (1) of the Islamic Administration Enactment for preaching without a permit.

Khusrin said various complaints had been lodged against Asri, whom he accused of holding several religious lectures — mostly around the affluent area of Sri Ukay in Ampang — without authorisation.

“All those who want to hold such events must follow the law and the ruling made by the Sultan,” said Khusrin.

“You need tauliah to preach in this state and all you have to do is apply. We are open to processing applications,” he said, using the Arabic term for authorisation.

Khusrin’s statement, however, contradicts Asri’s earlier claims that his application for authorisation had been rejected on numerous occasions.

While waiting to be charged at the Gombak Lower Syariah court this morning, the former mufti went as far as accusing Jais of bias.

“What kind of Islam is this? There was even an instruction (from) Jais ‘to give everyone else permission to preach except for the Perlis mufti ’,” lambasted Asri.

Asri also insinuated that there was an “invisible hand” behind the fiasco.

Khusrin did not comment on Asri’s allegations on the external influence but denied rejecting applications made by the latter to preach in the state.

“We have written so many times to tell him that it’s alright for him to preach in Selangor,” Khusrin claimed.

To back his claims, the Jais director said Asri’s arrest was not unique, saying that there had been about 10 arrests made in the state on similar grounds.

“Maybe because Asri is a big figure so that’s why huge attention is given to this case,” suggested Khusrin.

He added that Jais intends to wrap up investigation as early as possible, given the attention the case has received.

Asri is currently free on bail. He is expected to be called before a Syariah investigation team at a date yet undetermined.

Khusrin declined to state the date Jais would call Asri in for questioning, saying only that the former Perlis mufti would be notified “once the time comes.”

Meanwhile, Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said he believed Jais is professional enough to provide free, fair and transparent investigations in Asri’s arrest, which has led to an uproar among the political elite.

“I know they will be able to carry out a fair investigation and look at all angles to ensure that justice is served not only to the people but also to Asri,” Khalid said.

He noted that Jais has powers that are independent of the state government to implement the Selangor Islamic Administration Enactment.

PM says country overdependent on IPPs

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak admitted today that the government needs to revise its energy policy, calling the current one obsolete and in need of a revamp.

In his keynote address at electricity utility TNB's 60th anniversary celebration here, he said the current policy was proven to be costly, both environmentally and financially.

Heavy dependence on independent power producers (IPPs) and costly natural resources like natural gas have taken its toll on the government financially while cheaper options like coal is damaging to the environment, said the prime minister.

"I don't like the current energy policy. It's not right," he told some 1,500 TNB workers attending the event.

"We are overly dependent on the IPPs and expensive resources like natural gas to produce energy and coal is what we call dirty technology, it's not environmentally friendly," he added.

Relations between IPPs and the government have not been good in recent years.

Many leaders from both sides of the political spectrum are calling for the government to be firm with the IPPs which they claimed have been stepping on its toes by providing energy at high prices.

While Najib today said the government should stop depending on the IPPs, he did not mention how the government planned to do so.

Later at a press conference, Najib said the government had begun embarking on a new energy policy that he claims would be focusing more on cost-effective resources.

As revealed in Najib's maiden Budget recently, the prime minister told the media that his administration had started studying sectors like renewable energy and green technology to replace the current policy.

"It's not a short-term solution, it's a long one but we need to make the first step," he said.

"Relations between IPPs and the government have not been good in recent years."

Now, who allowed these IPPs to be formed to exploit the country and its people?
Admitting having a stupid and shortsighted energy policy is no cure.

UMNO BN regime was the one who had awarded billions of ringgit of unfair contracts to IPP !!!!

Under these contracts, TNB is suppose to pay beyond market price to IPP even without demand !!! And these cost are ultimately pass on to consumer Rakyat !!!

Two JPJ officers hurt in brick attack

Two Penang Road Transport Department (JPJ) officers were injured when a motorcycle pillion rider hurled a brick which shattered the windscreen of the department's 4WD vehicle in Jalan Sungai Bakap here today.

Nur Suhaimi Kamarudin, 27, who was driving the vehicle, was injured in the face while his colleague, Ruzaizul Ahmad, 29, sustained minor injuries caused by glass shards.

Nur Suhaimi lost control of the vehicle, which skidded and crashed into a tree at the road-shoulder in the incident about noon.

The motorcycle-riding duo sped off in the direction of Simpang Empat.

Nur Suhaimi was warded at the Seberang Jaya Hospital where his condition was reported to be stable. Rizairul is undergoing treatment at the Sungai Bakap Hospital.

Seberang Perai Selatan police chief ACP Supt Shafien Mamat said the police did not rule out the possibility that the attack was masterminded by a “tonto” (look-outs for thugs) or those unhappy with JPJ’s enforcement activities.

He said the officers were heading to Sungai Bakap from Simpang Ampat when they were attacked with the brick

Hmmm..I believe the coffee money had been paid to the JPJ enforcers.Yet they still took actions on errant lorries. The lorry driver had to give the tontos RM100-200/month of their hard earned money. The tontos will take certain percentage from it and the rest will be used to bribed the JPJs enforcers..

Ministry, bank asked to explain deposit collection

The Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Ministry and a bank have been asked to explain the collection of deposit money from the public to participate in a fish breeding project in Perak.

Kelantan Umno Youth secretary Bazlan Baharuddin said a private company which claimed it was representing the ministry, and had full cooperation from the bank, was collecting a RM6,000 deposit from potential participants.

“I think the ministry and the bank should offer an explanation on the matter,” he told Bernama when asked to comment on a walk-in interview mounted by staff of the company here today, to lure potential investors.

Soi Lek now sides with Tee Keat against central committee, EGM

Whoever said politics makes for strange bedfellows must have had MCA in mind. Beleaguered party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat has found an unlikely ally – his erstwhile arch-foe Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, who said in Johor Baru tonight that the party should let the peace plan be implemented instead and that another EGM would be a waste of time.

Another EGM has been requisitioned by 16 central committee members to pave the way for fresh elections. Under the party constitution, an EGM must now be held because at least one third of central committee members have asked for it.

Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, who was recently appointed the deputy president to replace Dr Chua, has also thrown his weight behind the pro-EGM group.

Liow said earlier today that, if necessary, the central committee could resign en masse to compel fresh polls.

Dr Chua said tonight that the peace plan should be implemented and said he was shocked to find leaders who had earlier backed Ong now turning against him.

He believes that “some people” whom he did not name were now eyeing higher posts in the party.

Dr Chua said he backed the peace plan which he felt should include the interests of all factions, including that of Liow.

The crisis was initially sparked by Ong’s move to sack Dr Chua, who was elected MCA deputy president last October.

This resulted in an EGM at which Ong lost a confidence vote by a wafer-thin margin while Dr Chua’s membership was restored although delegates refused to specifically reinstate him as MCA No 2.

Ong subsequently reneged on his word and refused to resign. Instead he relied on the party constitution which says he can only be removed by a two-thirds majority vote in an EGM.

Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak then stepped in to broker a peace plan between the two men.

The Malaysian Insider understands that the peace plan would see the party appointments carved out between supporters of the two men.

But it is also understood that the plan could see a schedule for the eventual exit of both men.

But with no details revealed publicly, uneasiness and niggling doubts have set in, leading to central committee members calling for another EGM and fresh polls.

Despite losing control of his party, Ong has refused to back down and appears determined to stay on.

Despite the backing of his enemy Dr Chua, the peace plan still appears doomed because of the intense animosity created by the crisis.

Fresh polls, which is not a prospect that Najib had wanted to see in BN’s second biggest component party, could also see damaging blood-letting.
