PKFZ recording impressive cargo handling for past 3 years

Share
Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, the Transport Minister said that the PKFZ (Port Klang Free Zone) has been very impressively improving in terms of cargo handled for the past 3 years even with the so-called ‘scandal’ which keep putting it into the spotlight. He said “In 2007, only 1,581 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) and 34,175 tonnes of cargo were handled in the PKFZ transhipment hub. Last year, however, the volume increased tremendously to 43,032 TEUs and 1.28 million tonnes of cargo handled,” He added that “To date, the PKFZ had attracted more than RM900mil in investments and provided jobs to 1,000 people.

The PKFZ had more than 50 investors involved in various activities, ranging from manufacturing to trading, logistics and general services. One of the world’s largest manufacturers of sub-sea oil and gas equipment, Aker Solutions of Norway, came to the PKFZ in 2007 and positioned Port Klang as its base for the Asia-Pacific region. Efforts in promoting the PKFZ as the preferred logistics and distribution hub were beginning to bear fruit, with the emergence of the London Metal Exchange and cotton distribution hubs in the PKFZ. The potential growth of cargo in the zone from investments and spin-off activities was expected to contribute much to the future thoughput of Port Klang and the economic development of Pulau Indah.”
