Tee Keat: MCA is above any one man

MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said today the delegates attending the upcoming extraordinary general meeting (EGM) must choose whether an individual’s interest should prevail over that of the party and nation.

Ong, who is Transport Minister, said he accepted all the five motions proposed by supporters of sacked deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek because he did not want to prolong the “difficult situation” within the party.

“I want a quick solution to unite the party so that we can focus on strengthening the party to serve the people, even if that means putting my head on the chopping block,” he said in his blog.

A motion of no confidence against Ong and a move to reinstate Dr Chua will be tabled at the EGM, the date of which will be announced tomorrow.

Ong said he accepted the proposed agenda because he was committed to transparency and wanted the MCA to be more open and to listen more to the people.

“I accept the EGM requisitionists’ resolutions in totality, fearlessly and magnanimously knowing that I may lose all. I am not important. The MCA is and I do not want to prolong the difficult situation the party is in,” he added.

He also described his acceptance as “a retort” to claims by his detractors that the rift was caused by his own lack of confidence in his leadership.

The issue was no longer between Chua and himself, he said. Ong said he was confident that the delegates would not be swayed by “lies, half-truths, intimidation or monetary offers”.

“They possess the wisdom to determine the destiny of the MCA. Ultimately, they will know the consequences of not doing the right thing.

They will realise that the impact will go beyond the MCA to strike the heart of the family institution,” he said.

The EGM is being called in the wake of the expulsion last month of Chua who was punished for tarnishing the image of the party following a sex viedo scandal.
