A TV3 senior news producer told the High Court here today that she did not do a fact-check on Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin’s tweet about the Johor Sultan winning the “WWW 1” registration number.

Rohani Ngah, who has worked for the broadcaster for 15 years, said it was her assignment editor who verified the facts before she processed the news to be broadcast on the Buletin Utama prime-news segment on May 30, last year.

“The content, facts are checked by Ing Boon Seng,” said Rohani at the High Court here today.

“Are you involved in the actual verification process?” asked TV3’s lawyer Liew Teck Huat.

“No,” replied the 39-year-old news producer.

Nizar, who is the former Perak mentri besar, filed a RM50 million defamation suit last July against Sistem Televisyen Malaysia Berhad (TV3) and Rohani for its May 30, 2012 news report that allegedly could have been interpreted a number of ways, including that he had committed sedition, was a traitor to the Sultan of Johor and had incited the people to hate the Johor ruler.

Rohani, who wore a purple headscarf, stressed today that she only checked the news report’s story structure, grammar and spelling.

“The story was written by the reporter. He, or she, was assigned by the assignment editor. Assignment editor will check the story.

“Approved by Datuk (Mohd) Ashraf (Abdullah),” she said, referring to the deputy group managing editor of television and radio networks of Media Prima Berhad.

When Nizar’s lawyer Mohd Fikri Asmuni asked Rohani if she had talked to Ashraf about the fairness of the report, she said: “In this case, I leave it to Datuk.”

Ashraf testified earlier today that TV3 had paraphrased Nizar’s tweet to suggest that the Johor ruler had used public funds for the RM520,000 bid.

“Any reasonable person reading the tweets would come to the conclusion,” said Ashraf.

Nizar, however, testified last January that he had never accused the Johor Sultan of using public monies for the coveted registration number.

Rohani denied today that she was negligent in her duties as a news producer.

“I received orders to do the story like that.

“The story was prepared by the editorial team. I just used it,” she said.

“It was approved by my boss,” added Rohani.

Justice Datin Yeoh Wee Siam set Feb 4 for written submissions and March 22 for decision on the case.

As much as I hate TV3, the fact remains that this is a twitter post which is completely unrelated to TV3 itself.

How much salary is she getting as a news producer at TV3? RM10 K a month? Probably more.
Just doing grammar and spelling check? Plain silly! Down with TV3!

The bucks stops with the news producer. If you produce the news then you are responsible and the TV3 is responsible.

Do not push down your responsibility to those below you. It is unbecoming of a leader in your organization.

Those fellas in TV3 do not verify facts. They consume garbage and spew out the like.

Opposition figures do NOT have room to tweek information, it has been the hobby and forte of those on the opposite divide to cut their nose to spite their own face. And they thought they could get away scot-free simply because the system favoured them!

They thought that by dragging Sdr Nizar into a controversy which involved a VVIP, it would make him looked every bit a traitor to his race and religion, and that his political career would be cut short, and cast into oblivion. They had figured that Nizar would earn public odium and deemed to be a person unworthy of their trust.

What they didn't expect was that a person of character, honour and dignity would fight back in the face of extreme adversary. They didn't expect that Sdr Nizar would bounce back stronger, with improved credibility, dignified and considered a hero of the people.

The Malays should be proud that their compatriot had withstood wilful and malicious lies, despicable acts of vengeance, brutal character-assassination, political backstabbing and abuse of main stream media and government machineries.

Sdr Nizar has our fullest support! The court must now find the evil party guilty as charged...
