A radio presenter for Radio Free Sarawak, which has been heavily critical of Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud's administration, was taken by three unidentified men after landing in Miri this morning.
According to a statement from the radio station, Peter John Jaban was flying in to Sarawak from Kota Kinabalu to celebrate the Gawai harvest festival with his family.
But his lawyer, Alan Ling, said he was completely in the dark as to who the men were or why they had detained him at about 10.45am this morning.
DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang said in a statement that Ling, who is a local DAP leader and Piasau assemblyman, had spoken to Miri police who said they "had no instruction and were not involved in Jaban's arrest or disappearance."
"On their way to town, three men in a Proton car stopped Teo and Jaban, and Jaban was taken away," the Ipoh Timor MP said, calling it an "abduction."
Radio Free Sarawak is run by former British prime minister Gordon Brown's sister-in-law Claire Rewcastle Brown, an activist who has accused the Barisan Nasional (BN) government in the state of destroying the state's natural resources for Abdul Taib's personal gain.
RFS and its related whistleblower website Sarawak Report had in the months leading up to last April's state election ramped up accusations of widespread corruption against the chief minister during his 30-year administration.
Although Abdul Taib's coalition won the election, opposition parties managed to double their representation in the 71-seat state assembly
If this anchor man doesn't come back safely to work for Radio Free Sarawak, it's very clear who did it.
What is heppening in Malaysia? Politicians can take matters into their own hands without the law? This is really becoming bad bad bad. All nonsense under the current BN rules and they think they are the king forever. The rakyat has got to stop this nonsense.
