Mat Sabu wins PAS deputy presidency

Popular PAS leader Mohamad Sabu has won the party deputy presidency from incumbent Nasharudin Mat Isa while Kelantan leader Datuk Husam Musa has joined two incumbents for the three vice-presidential slots, sources said today.

The other two vice-presidents are incumbents Salahuddin Ayub, who polled the most votes, and Datuk Mahfuz Omar, who came in third among the six vying for the posts. A total of 1,100 delegates cast their ballots in this year's election.

“According to unofficial information, Mat Sabu (picture) won with some 450 votes this time to win over the two other candidates,” a source told ..

Other sources confirmed the information as accurate. It is learnt all the votes were tallied by midnight and the results have been sealed. Official results are scheduled to be announced at 10am.

Mohamad, who is popularly known as Mat Sabu, was contesting the post for the second straight time against the three-term deputy president Nasharudin and Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, both of whom are seen to leaders from the ulama or scholars’ group.

In the vice-presidential race, the three losing candidates are former Perak Mentri Besar, the popular Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin, Information Chief Idris Ahmad and Kelantan exco member Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah.

Party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang was returned unopposed for the fifth term in the elections where another 53 candidates are contesting for the remaining 18 positions in the central working committee.

Voting for the posts of deputy president, vice presidents and the central working committee for 2011-2013 began at 4pm yesterday and lasted three hours.
