(Bernama) - PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail today advised the independent candidate for Padungan, Dominque Ng, to withdraw from contesting in the April 16 state election.

She said this was because Ng had agreed to support and campaign for the opposition.

“Our advice to him is that he should actually withdraw. Let this be a fight between the Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Rakyat,” she told reporters at the PKR Kuching headquarters, here today.

On Tuesday, Ng left the PKR to contest as an independent in Padungan after he was not picked by the leadership to defend the seat following a seat swap with the DAP.

He is locked in a three-cornered fight with BN’s Sim Kiang Chiok and DAP’s Wong King Wei.

The opposition was concerned that a three-cornered fight in Padungan would cause a split in the votes and give BN the advantage.

On whether Ng would be accepted back into PKR if he were to win, Azizah said: “We are a party, you cannot come and go as you like. There is a set of rules that you have to go by.”

Meanwhile, PKR state information chief and candidate for Batu Lintang, See Chee How, said the presence of more than 40 independent candidates in the 10th state election was not a matter of concern for the opposition.

Dominique should put some serious thought on this - there's no point winning your battle if Pakatan should lose out on the war.

At this critical phase, the long-term objectives mean making sacrifices. He knows the sentiments of the voters on the ground but his participation in the fray is ill-timed.
