UMNO flatterers...MCA members cannot attend Bersih 2.0, says Soi Lek

Share

MCA has forbidden its members from taking part in Bersih 2.0 next month and will take disciplinary action against those arrested at the rally.

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said the party respected the right to assemble but did not believe taking to the streets in support of what he said were “politically motivated” issues.

“We cannot accept the objective of this illegal rally,” he told reporters at Wisma MCA here after chairing a presidential council meeting.

Dr Chua said election watchdog Bersih was being used by opposition parties to further their own aims and accused the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) of not having the integrity to resign from the state and parliamentary seats it won on an allegedly “unclean” electoral roll.

“If they were elected on a tainted roll, they should have the political and moral courage to resign then,” he said.

“Why hold on to power after three years and then say, oh, it is tainted?”

He added that PR participation in 16 by-elections since Election 2008 despite its insistence that polls were not clean and fair made a “mockery” of the Bersih 2.0 rally.

PR hopes the July 9 Bersih 2.0 rally will generate momentum ahead of a general elections expected within a year.

The first Bersih rally in 2007 saw up to 50,000 people take to the streets of Kuala Lumpur before being dispersed by police armed with tear gas and water cannon.

The rally has been partly credited for PR’s record gains in Election 2008, where the opposition pact swept to power in five states and won 82 parliamentary seats.

Umno Youth and Perkasa have said they will hold separate counter rallies on the same day but MCA has declined to join in.

Who needs their presence, anyway. In fact, it does not make any difference whether they attend or not. Chua is only doing this as a pretext of showing how resolute and obedient they are to their big brother.

MCA = Mahu Cari Angpau before Mar 2008
MCA = Mahu Cari Apa since Mar 2008
MCA = Members Cannot Attend during Bersih 2.0
