Years late, but consortium gets another 2 to finish infantry complex

Share
The Defence Ministry has ordered the consortium tasked to build the 7th Infantry Brigade complex in Skudai Camp, Gelang, to complete the project within 24 months.

Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said failing to do so would result in the ministry appointing new contractors to take over the project which was supposed to be completed in 2007.

He said Perbadanan Perwira Harta Malaysia Bhd, the subsidiary of the Armed Forces Fund Board, could be asked to take over the project under the “build, lease and transfer” arrangement without incurring additional costs to the government.

He was speaking to reporters after opening the Johor Ex-servicemen Cooperative in Simpang Renggam, 71km from here.

According to the 2002 Federal Audit Report, the project, carried out by a consortium of two companies, began construction in May 2000.

The consortium, however, stopped the construction of the RM256 million project in 2003 at 18.3 per cent progress.

The delay caused the problems of erosion in the area and flooding in Kampung Poh Chi Leng and Kampung Baru Skudai each time there was rain.

Ahmad Zahid said the ministry was also looking into the dilapidated condition of the Ulu Tiram combat training centre.

He said a new contractor would be appointed in 90 days to continue with the construction of the centre’s new facilities worth RM20 million.

Earlier in his speech he called on 18,000 ex-servicemen to join the cooperative movement to benefit from its programme.
