Bersih chief welcomes Umno Youth march on July 9

Election watchdog chief Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan applauded today Khairy Jamaluddin’s vow to carry on with the Umno Youth march to rival the Bersih rally next month as a sign of Malaysia’s flourishing democracy.

“It’s very refreshing to read the comment of Khairy Jamaluddin who realises the right to assemble under the Federal Constitution,” the Bersih 2.0 chairman told The Malaysian Insider.

Ambiga, a lawyer, said she fully supported Khairy’s stand despite their different views.

The former Malaysian Bar president stressed it was because Khairy was standing up for the “right to assemble peaceably and without arms and that’s the same right we are exercising,” she told

Khairy, who was elected Umno Youth chief replacing Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, thumbed his nose yesterday at his predecessor even as the home minister warned the police will act against the illegal gathering.

He said that his predecessor “can warn us all he wants” but “Pemuda will continue come what may.”

“My Pemuda and I are ready to face whatever consequences. This is a new Malaysia. We have a right to assembly guaranteed by the constitution. Umno Youth will be marching on 9 July. And that’s that,” Khairy said.

The Rembau MP also said his youth wing’s march on July 9 is to “strengthen the democratic system”, and rival electoral reform group Bersih 2.0’s rally on the same day

Rally or no rally, bersih or kotor, pemuda or pe tua...just vote the present governmnet out. It s tiime up for them we want a change

There are still many conservative thinking Malaysian scared to change, we cannot live like this anymore. We need to change the government. BN has done enough damage to the country.

Its getting more Interesting now that we have the 3 groups going for the PEACEFUL march. Khairi group should stand along with the Bersih group, that would be hurtful to Perkosa to feel.
