Kerdau assemblyman in critical condition

Kerdau state assemblyman Datuk Zaharuddin Abu Kassim who slipped into a coma this morning was transferred back to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of the National Heart Institute (IJN) in critical condition.

According to Kuala Krau Member of Parliament Datuk Ismail Mohamed Said, Zaharuddin, 63, was admitted to the IJN on May 9, following complications after an operation for ulcer in the intestine at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh, Pahang.

He was transferred to a normal ward last Wednesday but when a nurse tried to wake him up at 6am today, he did not respond.

“I was told by one of his children that he was unconscious when a nurse tried to wake him up to give medicine. I was made to understand that he might have suffered a stroke,” he told Bernama here today.

Ismail said doctors had asked Zaharuddin’s family members to come to IJN because his lungs and heart had weakened while he remained in a coma.

The Kerdau assemblyman had stood under the Umno banner during the 2008 general election and won the seat after polling 4,135 votes to beat PAS candidate Hassanudin Salim by a 1,615-vote majority.

The constituency comprises 89 per cent Malays, 6 per cent Chinese, 3.7 per cent Indians and 2.5 per cent others.

Kit Siang demands Najib explain Bakun Dam, Sime Darby fiasco

DAP’s Lim Kit Siang today demanded the Prime Minister answer allegations of RM1.7 billion in cost over-runs of the Bakum Dam project and whether the government would be seeking a RM700 million bailout package for Sime Darby.

Lim claimed that Datuk Seri Najib Razak had dodged questions about the Sime Darby costs overruns scandal since the GLC-conglomerate’s May 13 admission of RM964 million losses for the second half of the Financial Year for 2010

Today Lim alleged that Bakun Dam cost over-runs amounted to RM1. 7 billion, making it “a different kettle of fish altogether.”

“It has been reported that Sime Darby has incurred more than RM1 billion in cost overruns from carrying out a civil works contract for the hydroelectric project, with one estimate putting the total cost overruns at RM1.7 billion, which is almost the same size as Sime Darby’s actual Bakun contract of RM1.8 billion.

“It has also been reported that the government has agreed to reimburse around RM700 million to Sime Darby, leaving the group with around RM1 billion to deal with,” said Lim in a statement today.

According to the Ipoh Timur MP, Najib’s statement asking Sime Darby to determine the cause of its RM964 million losses first “before the issue of responsibility” was wrong as the RM964 million losses are only for the second half of the financial year of 2010.

He said that the figure was a “small portion” of the total losses of Sime Darby in its history of some RM3.5 billion write-offs, and with more to come.

Lim provided a list taken from The Star newspaper which showed Sime Darby’s history of write-offs.

For the financial year for 2004 and 2005, the Bakum Dam project incurred a RM132 million loss in cost overruns.

Sime Bank’s losses for the financial year of 1998 in turn amounted to RM1.8 billion.

“While investigations are ongoing to determine the causes of the losses and the persons responsible, Najib should not shirk responsibility from giving Parliament and Malaysians answers which are available to him now … whether the Bakun Dam project has cost overruns of RM1.7 billion and that the government will be asking Parliament for a RM700 million bailout package for Sime Darby,” stressed Lim.

The DAP advisor remarked that former Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad “is gloating over the Sime Darby and Bakun Dam fiascos” and had gotten his revenge when he recently called on Tun Musa Hitam and the entire Sime Darby Board to resign over the cost overruns.

Musa was Mahathir’s nemesis in the mid 1980s Musa had teamed up with Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah to challenge Mahathir for his premiership.

But Lim conceded with Dr Mahathir when the former PM questioned why only the Sime Darby CEO, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zubir Murshid was made responsible for the conglomerate’s losses, while others who were involved with the project resulting in its cost overrun and delay for 3 years were not identified.

“However, Dr Mahathir should not be overhasty in his bombardment of Musa and Sime Darby, as during the Sime Bank Bhd financial crisis when it incurred losses amounting to RM1.8 billion during the 1997/8 Asian financial crisis, only the banking head Datuk Ismail Zakaria resigned while the group president and chief executive Tan Sri Nik Mohamed Nik Yaacob retired only in 2004.

“Zubir took over the position of chief executive after that.

“Who was the Prime Minister during the Sime Bank crisis of 1997/8?” asked Lim.

Betting licences: Listen to the people, says Abdullah

The government should listen to the views of the people regarding the decision to issue football betting licences to legalise football betting in view of the 2010 World Cup next month, former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said today.

Abdullah, who is chairman the Malaysian Institute of Islamic Understanding (Ikim), said the people had the right to speak their minds and the government should listen to them.

“The party that approved the licence should consider the views carefully. In Islam, and probably in other religions, betting is unacceptable,” he said after opening the “Mai...Riuh!” programme here.

Prior to this, Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung was reported as saying that the ministry had issued the licence to a local company to start football betting operations for the 2010 World Cup.

However, many parties want the government to revoke the licence for fear that it would invite social problems among the people.

Putrajaya will study reaction to sports betting plan

Putrajaya will study public feedback to its move to legalise sports betting following an uproar over the licence reinstated to tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan’s dormant online gaming company.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today the government recognised the public reaction on its move to legalise sports betting and would analyse the feedback from Muslims and non-Muslims.

“I have not been informed in detail what is the situation, to be frank, but we have also recognised the reactions from the public, Muslims and non-Muslims.

“I do believe we will take that into consideration. But as it is now I have not been briefed in detail what is the issue,” Muhyiddin told reporters here.

The DPM’s remarks come following stinging criticisms and public outcry over the Najib administration’s recent move in legalising sports betting ahead of the World Cup next month.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had issued a licence to Tan’s Ascot Sports Sdn Bhd, which is to be acquired by the Berjaya Group — also controlled by Tan. Berjaya will take a 70 per cent stake in Ascot.

DAP has accused Najib of “cronyism” for awarding Tan the sports betting licence without an open tender process, saying that it sounded the “death knell” to his New Economic Model (NEM) which was supposed to eliminate rent-seeking and patronage.

In contrast, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had rejected the Finance Ministry’s proposal to legalise sports betting during his reign as prime minister.

In Malaysia, illegal bookmaking activities are estimated to be worth up to RM20 billion a year.

Pakatan Rakyat leaders have accused BN of legalising sports betting as a means to boost flagging revenues amidst a wide deficit gap ahead of the 2010 Fifa World Cup in June.

The government’s latest decision has hit a raw nerve with sections of the Malay community, who have started protesting in mosques on the perceived dangers of the legalisation of sports betting.

Kapar MP denies will quit PKR today

Kapar MP S. Manikavasagam has again denied swirling speculation that he will announce his resignation from PKR this evening.

“The rumour is false. False, false, I will be with PKR no matter what happens to me, whether disciplinary action or the Selcat decision,” he told The Malaysian Insider.

Asked if he was attending a scheduled press conference in Shah Alam this evening, Manikavasagam said he did not know anything about it.

“I just came from meeting my constituents. I don’t know who is spreading this information.

“I am not a coward, I will not run away from my responsibilities in PKR,” he said, adding “I have already made my stand clear to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim early this week”.

This is not the first time that the MP has been linked to speculation that he will leave the party.

He received a notice yesterday from state watchdog Selangor Select Committee on Competency, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat) over his allegations of graft in state sand mining concessionaire Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd.

Rumours spread through text messages and the Internet claimed the first-term MP will announce he is leaving PKR at a Shah Alam hotel at 2pm today.

The rumours also said two Kedah state assemblymen will be at the media conference.

The Kedah Pakatan Rakyat government is holding a rally tonight to dispel speculation that it’s unstable or several assemblymen will leave to force a dissolution of the state assembly or a change of government.

PKR had already lost two assemblymen in Kedah since Election 2008.

Rumours of Manikavasagam possible resignation has reached a feverish pitch after he revealed possible graft in the sand mining industry.

PKR has lost a total of five assemblymen and six federal seats through walkouts by four MPs, the sacking of one and the Hulu Selangor loss, all of which happened since last February.

He will not resign, but some way or other he might try his best to get himself sacked from PKR and Pakatan. This is to safe his " maruah" as a "responsible MP". At the same
time he might be getting the benefits for jumping ship.

This is only a hypothetical theory, but if it is true the nation should pee on him especially the indians.
To our laymen s knowledge he has been a respectable leader but vociferous not knowing how to use existing internal party means in bringing up issues.

The current issue depicts that either he has been bought over or he is sincere but childish in the approach or even boisterous to show he is great.
What ever it is, PKR pick your candidates wisely in future who are more responsibly matured.

'We had high esteem on you man. Don't disappoint us. Be matured and solve issues responsibly for the people, party and country"

Najib told media to work alongside government to bring chang

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak urged Malaysian media not to sensationalize news to sell the stories but rather, the media should work hand-in-hand with the government to bring impact and changes to the country.

When delivering his speech at a ground breaking ceremony for Utusan Melayu (M) Berhad's new headquarters building, Najib told the media to cooperate with the government to transform Malaysia. While it is not wrong to sensationalize certain issues, media must remember to prioritize relevant news to help society develop critical thinking ability.

Pakatan rally to prove Kedah’s stability

The Kedah Pakatan Rakyat government will make an attempt to prove its solidarity tonight by calling on all three of its PKR assemblymen to speak at its mammoth rally in Alor Setar.

Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said the gathering in Kota Sarang Semut near capital Alor Star should quash all talk that it would be hit by a spate of PKR defections that would cause it to topple.

“All those who are supposedly going to defect will be there — all my three PKR assemblyman.

“They will be speaking to the people to dispel talk of their possible defections,” he told The Malaysian Insider when contacted by phone.

Azizan reiterated that he had no plans to dissolve the Kedah assembly, not even if two assemblymen defected.

His words goes against his earlier statement that he would dissolve the assembly at the slightest indication that one of his men were about to leave.

“Why should I? We still have the majority. We can still govern the state even if they leave,” he said confidently.

He acknowledged that he had already received many “indications” of the purported defections but said they were merely malicious rumours spread by “troublemakers”.

“The question is whether those indications are true or not. Some people have even said that the consent of the Sultan has already been sought for the Barisan Nasional to form the state government but can we believe them?” he said.

In the recent days, talk was rife that more PKR defections would soon follow, particularly in Kedah due to the small seat-majority between the BN and PR assemblymen.

PR holds 20 seats in the 36-seat assembly with PAS holding 16, PKR three and DAP one, while the BN has 14.

The assembly’s two independents Radzhi Salleh (Lunas) and Tan Wei Shu (Bakar Arang) are, however, said to be pro-BN.

The High Court had ordered the Election Commission to call a by-election for the Kota Siputeh state seat in Kedah after the assemblyman Datuk Abu Hasan Sarif twice went AWOL from the state legislative assembly meetings.

The decision is currently being appealed by the EC.

If PR loses three more assemblymen from the assembly, BN’s seat number would shoot to 17, with the support of the two independents while the PR would only have 17 assemblymen.

“But still, don’t forget about the Kota Siputeh seat. The status of that seat is still in question,” Azizan reminded.

When contacted, PKR assemblyman Lim Soon Nee confirmed with The Malaysian Insider that he would be speaking at the rally.

“Whatever I need to explain to the people will be said tomorrow night,” he said yesterday, confidently adding that he would not leave PKR.

A PKR source had named Lim as one of the possible defectors from PKR as he was a close friend of Tan.

PKR’s other two assemblymen Tan Chow Kang (Sidam) and S. Manikumar (Bukit Selambau) had already both denied there was any rift in the PR and assured The Malaysian Insider that they were loyal to their party when contacted earlier.

“I am tired. I think I have spoken about this issue more than 50 times. I have many times denied but people still ask when the issue is brought up,” Tan told The Malaysian Insider.

“I want to close the file, I don’t want to talk about this issue anymore. They invite me for this event, so I will use the gathering to explain and I hope people will know my stand ... and not raise the issue again,” he said.

DAP’s sole assemblyman Lee Guan Aik (Kota Darul Aman) had also agreed with his colleagues and insisted that the Kedah PR government was very strong.

“There may be some problems in the PKR but I do not think it will come to that level. I believe this is just the work of our opponents who are plotting to create this sense of uneasiness in hopes of destroying us,” he had reportedly said.

Azizan: You really, really disappoint Najib and Umno. They really want you to dissolve the state assembly because they think they can win the state election. They plan to bride the votes with big money. They are also planning to cheat with the help of EC on the postal votes, and changing the voter lists, etc. Many people of Kedah are also disappointed because they can't get the gifts that the voters of Hulu Selangor and Sibu got from UMNO.
aiyah...Azizan...we miss the chance lah..

I think UMNO & Co. is dreaming..yeah sweet dream..same plot, same director but with different actors..plotting down the Kedah government who was elected by the rakyat is clearly a circus act. They talk about democracy where "suara of rakyat" is "keramat", but when rakyat deposed them, they say rakyat is ungrateful. I believed that DS Azizan and Companion in Pakatan have a wisdom to face the challange and the rakyat of Kedah are even smarter than what UMNO & Co. thinking of. To Kedahan (Malay, Chinese, Indian, Siamese etc.) show them our solidarity..this is our country!

Mugilan to make 'explosive' revelation about Samy

PETALING JAYA: Expelled MIC Youth deputy chief V. Mugilan has promised to make an explosive statement about party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu today.

Mugilan, who was expelled on Wednesday for speaking out against Samy Vellu, said he would make an important revelation about the party president at a press conference.

“I have a big statement to make that will shake Samy Vellu,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Mugilan said he had received a letter of expulsion from the MIC that was sent to his home in Rawang on Wednesday night.

However, he said, the letter only touched on his call for Samy Vellu to retire immediately instead of staying on until September 2011.

Samy Vellu had earlier announced he would be retiring eight or nine months ahead of the end of his presidential term in May 2012.

Mugilan, who is also Hulu Selangor MIC Youth chief, was initially supposed to face a disciplinary committee for allegedly working against the party during the Hulu Selangor by-election last month.

He said he would appeal against the expulsion to the party’s central working committee on Monday.

MIC fight turns nasty, more calls for president to quit

Two more call for Samy to quit

KLANG: The call for MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu to step down now has gained momentum with two high ranking MIC leaders joining sacked Youth deputy chief V. Mugilan in making a similar demand.

MIC central working committee (CWC) member K.P. Samy said Samy Vellu had overstayed his tenure as party president and must leave for the MIC to recover from its current predicament.

“We lost heavily in the last general election and have also lost the support of the community that we profess to represent.

“The MIC is in bad shape and to rejuvenate it, Samy Vellu has to leave,” added K.P. Samy.

Samy Vellu had announced at the Federal Territory MIC delegates' conference recently that he would quit as party president in September next year.

K.P. Samy also said that an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) should be called to decide on Samy Vellu's position as president.

“Let the delegates decide if they want him to remain as president or want him to leave as soon as possible,” said K.P. Samy.

“Other Barisan Nasional component parties are making various changes but Samy Vellu is still talking about destroying people.”

He was referring to Samy Vellu's recent statement that he would destroy the people who tried to destroy the party, namely two people living in Kuala Lumpur and Klang.

It is said that he was referring to Klang-based businessman Ohms Thiagarajan and former MIC deputy president Datuk S. Subramaniam.

In Petaling Jaya, CWC member G. Kumar Aamaan also called for Samy Vellu's early resignation. He said Mugilan's sacking was a way for Samy Vellu to silence his critics.

Kumar said Mugilan should not have been sacked for voicing his opinion.

“Maika Holdings cannot even be managed properly, how can he (Samy Vellu) even manage the Indian community?”

“I dare him to sack me after this,” Kumar said when contacted.

He said that if he was sacked, he would hand a memorandum to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak or the King to explain the situation in the party.

“The Prime Minister won the Hulu Selangor by-election for the Indian community, not Samy Vellu,” Kumar added.

Quit now! – Deputy Youth chief of MIC tells Samy Vellu

V Mugilan, the deputy chief of the MIC has done the unthinkable when he demanded the president Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu to step down from his post immediately instead of in ‘8 to 9 months’ as announced by Samy Vellu. He said that if the longest serving president do not resign immediately, the party might be ‘wiped out in the next general election’. This will surely not augur well with the party leader and since the outburst, V Mugilan will be called to the disciplinary board. He said “If Samy Vellu waits till September 2011, the deputy president (G Palanivel) will not have enough time to reform before the general election (due) in 2012. Samy Vellu always blames (former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamed for his failures (but) Mahathir was a catalyst for development. If we can't do our work, (we should not) blame someone else for our weaknesses. Only 55 percent of the community now support BN, while the current MIC parliamentarians have only been able to defend their seats by a small majority of 2,000. I'm forced to make this comment now because time have come for my beloved president to leave the party in the interests of the party and the community. I feel sad to pressure to him to step down but it is for the good of the party. This is not to directed to him as an individual. We should be professional about this.”

Mugilan added that “While changes have occurred in other BN component parties, the MIC has stayed the same for the past 30 years. I'm worried the Indian community will opt for an alternative party to replace MIC... I stress that I have (nothing to) gain in doing this. It is entirely for the betterment of the party, the community and BN. I'm doing exactly what Samy Vellu did to VT Sambanthan... he asked Sambanthan to leave after leading the party for 16 years. If I am sacked, Samy Vellu should also go... In Umno, Muhyiddin (Yassin) forced Pak Lah (Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) to resign. In MCA, Liow Tiong Lai compelled the party to(call) fresh elections.”

OTHERWISE....ALL YOUR CRONIES WILL GANG UP TO KICK YOU OFF....WHAT A PARTY THEN,HAHHAHHAHA!!!!!!!

Sorry, we cannot investigate. Tell it to MACC – EC on Najib’s RM5m ‘offer’

According to Datuk Wira Wan Ahmad Wan Omar, the deputy chairman of the EC (Election Commission) they have no power to investigate the prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for ‘promising’ the voters in Sibu during the campaign for its by-election when he said that he will ‘sign a cheque’ of RM5million for flood mitigation projects in Rejang Park if BN (Barisan Nasional) had won.

DAP however won the by-election. Wira said that Karpal Singh, the chairman of DAP should lodge his complaint against the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission). He said “We can still take the complaint but will refer it to the MACC,” Karpal had, after the by-election said that Najib ‘violated election laws’ when he made his offer to the crowd in Sibu and called on the EC and MACC to investigate. Wan Ahmad added that “Other persons, included cabinet ministers, who make promises cannot be charged for the offence of inducement or bribery under the Act. We cannot investigate anything other than what’s specified under the Act… we don’t have the power. However, Section 10 of the Act which covers bribery during elections uses the words “every person would be liable for an offence”. I also feel Karpal was viewing the issue from his perspective. But other legal experts may look at it from other angles and have other interpretations,”

Samy Vellu ‘retaliates’ against Mugilan

The president of MIC Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu has ‘retaliated’ against V Mugilan, the deputy chief of the party’s youth wing for demanding that he resign from his presidential post immediately instead of waiting for the next 8 to 9 months. Mugilan will be referred to the disciplinary committee of the party for having worked against the MIC and BN (Barisan Nasional) during campaigning in the by-election of Hulu Selangor.

Samy Vellu said "Mugilan was one of those people who had worked against the BN in the by-election because he failed in his attempt to be fielded as a candidate. The party had actually wanted to take action against Mugilan after the Hulu Selangor by-election but deferred it. He acted as a stooge for "certain people", and had prevented Palanivel from re-contesting the parliamentary seat in the April 25 by-election. will continue to ensure the MIC is free from people who are bent on destroying it. We do not want people who are mere stooges of other people,"

BN must respect the constitution

After years of slumber, the guarantees contained in Malaysia’s most important document is slowly rising like a phoenix from the ashes to shine into the hearts and minds of ordinary Malaysians.

The recent by-elections have shown this to be true.

The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) President George Chan said that he does not know why voters in Sibu rejected the SUPP. He intends to conduct a post-mortem.

Ibrahim Ali claims that the Chinese are ungrateful for not voting Barisan despite the many election goodies thrown at them.

The Prime Minister believes that the Barisan machinery in Sibu moved in old and traditional ways and that the coalition needed to be more creative and energetic.

No need for post-mortems because instead of someone dying, something has come alive instead.

No need for blame games, the only way is forward.

No point having energy and creativity without a true purpose.

The fact is this.

In a wave that has begun with the Chinese and Christians all over Malaysia, voters are voting with enlightened minds inspired by the drive to see to it that Constitutional guarantees are met.

Thanks to initiatives such as the MyConstitution campaign by Bar Council’s Constitutional Law Committee to simplify the Federal Constitution and to reach out to 6 million households, Malaysians are no longer ignorant about their most precious of rights.

The promise of a new bridge will no longer guarantee you a man’s vote unless you can guarantee that he can assemble his friends and walk freely in a group across that bridge without first having to seek police permission.

The promise of a new school will no longer guarantee you a man’s vote unless you can guarantee that his child is entering an education system that is blind to colour but alive to need.

The offer of millions of ringgit for development will no longer guarantee you a man’s vote unless you can guarantee that his freedom to enjoy that development will never be taken away without due process.

The promise of three million ringgit for missionary schools will no longer guarantee you a man’s vote unless you can guarantee him that he can practice his religion freely without restrictions such as on the words he uses.

The promise of a flood mitigation system will not guarantee you a man’s vote because he realizes that he has, in the first place, a fundamental right to live safely and freely without having to worry about floods.

The fact that two polling centres were forced to open an hour late last Sunday because the Rejang River broke its banks is illustrative of this. Voters who had to wait for the waters to recede must have wondered why they were unable to exercise their right to vote because a necessity like a flood mitigation system was not already in place.

Money for this flood mitigation system should not be a problem given the fact that millions upon millions are poured into significantly less urgent matters like defence spending and not one but two Formula One teams.

Until and unless the BN begins to let itself be guided by the Constitution, it will continue to bleed support.

Eventually, the spread of Constitutional awareness and the demand that its guarantees are implemented will engulf the hearts and minds of every person of every race in Malaysia.

Young people of various races are already walking around in the sweltering heat reading newspapers upside down in protest against the lack of press freedom in the country. High achievers of all races living overseas are demanding for meritocracy and equal opportunity before they return.

Non-governmental organizations comprising of members from all races are calling for reforms with fiercer urgency. Every day cases are being filed in the courts by people of different races challenging laws and decisions on Constitutional grounds.

The spirit of Constitutional guarantees will outlive the laws and policies that seek to stifle them.

It may take awhile but there will come a day when all who stand against the fundamental liberties will be marginalised.

The outcome of the next general election will be greatly influenced by how much the Government is willing to ensure that the guarantees of the Federal Constitution are afforded to all citizens without being diluted by laws and policies contrary to its spirit.

This is the bridge over the troubled waters faced by the current administration. The question is whether it is willing to brave the trouble waters within its own camp in order to construct the bridge.

Kelantan palace guard shooting: Now it’s murder

Police have reclassified the shooting of a Kelantan palace guard as murder following the guard’s death today, 19 days after the incident.

Kelantan deputy police chief Datuk Amir Hamzah told Bernama that previously, police were investigating the case under the Firearms Act.

The guard, Ramli Mohamad, 50, was shot four times at close range by an unidentified assailant in Kampung Kok Keli, Tumpat, on May 1 while riding a motorcycle after completing his shift at midnight.

He died at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital here at 3.30am.

Police have arrested a palace staff to facilitate investigations.

Ibrahim Ali is not the PM – Soi Lek tells Chinese community

Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, the president of MCA has called on the Chinese community to not be annoyed and not punish the government for the verbal attack lashed out by Datuk Ibrahim Ali, the president of Malay rights group, Perkasa because his views does not in any way represent the BN (Barisan Nasional)’s stance. He said “I would say that Perkasa's statements can anger the Chinese. We can imagine the Chinese reacting very negatively towards Perkasa. But they should not react negatively to the government, because Perkasa is not in the government.”

Kinabatangan MP sentenced to 1 month jail

Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin, the Member of Parliament of Kinabatangan has been sentenced to jail of 1 month for unlawful polygamy where he got married to 31 year old actress Zizie Azette A Samad without the Syariah court’s consent. Syariah Court Judge Wan Mahyuddin Wan Muhammad, the Gombak Timur Lower Syariah Court Judge passed the sentence where Bung and Zizie pleaded guilty to. according to the Federal Constitution’s Article 48, a state assemblyman or a Member of Parliament will have to vacate the post if they are sentenced to jail of not less than a year or a fine of not less than RM2,000.

Wan Muhammad said “The court hopes that this case will be an important lesson for the public in understanding the concept of polygamy in Islam and also the importance of the institution of marriage. Even though the court has previously given a maximum sentence but many still commit the same offence. The court has decided that it needs to hand a severe punishment in the case for the betterment of the society. The court hopes that this punishment will give a clear picture and encourage the public to follow the procedures provisioned in the Islamic legal system. Bung Mokhtar should have respected the law because he is a lawmaker and represents the people. Zizie Izette is popular Muslim actress and both are idols. Their actions will be reciprocated by the public. If they don’t follow the rules... the rules can belittle by the people,”

‘I will destroy those who destroy MIC’

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu vouched that he would “destroy” those who destroy the party before he steps down as party president next year.

“I’m not going to go like a fool from the MIC and I will make a good decision before I leave,” he added when opening the Federal Territory MIC Convention here today.

Samy Vellu, who has been leading the MIC for 31 years (since 1979), expressed high hopes that the next party president would run the party peacefully.

On another note, he dismissed the perception that the MIC is no longer relevant for the Indian community as it had proven its worthiness by winning two by-elections.

“If MIC is not relevant, how then could we win in Bagan Pinang and Hulu Selangor (by-elections)?

“If we can go on with our transformation efforts, the MIC will continue to be accepted and respected,” he said to about 300 delegates at the convention.

At a press conference before the convention, Samy Vellu announced that he would vacate the party top post “eight or nine months” before his current term expires in May 2012.

Sabah, Sarawak will continue to be BN’s ‘fixed deposit’

Sabah Umno liaison deputy chief Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak said today Sabah, along with Sarawak, will continue to be the “fixed deposit” for the Barisan Nasional (BN), and shrugged off any notion that the Sabah BN faced a leadership crisis.

Salleh, a former Sabah chief minister, said the DAP victory in the Sibu parliamentary by-election in Sarawak on Sunday should not be used as the basis to claim that Sabah and Sarawak were no longer the “fixed deposit” for the BN.

“It (the outcome of the Sibu by-election) did not reflect the overall support of the people on the ground. It was an isolated case which was largely based on localised issues. I believe they will regret because by voting for the opposition it won’t solve their problems, and in the next election they will come back to the BN.

“The majority of the people of Sabah, and I believe also in Sarawak, are still solidly with the BN. We cannot conclude like that solely based on this by-election alone, and we must have a proper analysis or post-mortem,” he told reporters here.

Salleh was responding to a statement by Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) deputy president Datuk Chin Su Phin yesterday urging federal BN leaders to stop treating Sabah and Sarawak as the BN’s “fixed deposit” and claimed that the Sabah BN was having leadership problems. LDP is a Sabah BN component party.

Contrary to the claim, Salleh said, the Sabah BN was still solid and the majority of the BN component parties supported the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.

“The chief minister also has the support of the people of Sabah and federal leaders are happy with the state BN leadership. As a BN component party, we should abide by or support a leader chosen by the BN leadership,” he said.

Salleh also expressed regret that such a statement had come from a leader of a BN component party in the state.

“I don’t understand why they made such a statement openly in the media when they said that they had already brought this matter up with the BN leadership.

“We have proper avenues to give or channel our opinions or ideas for the betterment of the BN. For example, the leader of the state BN component party concerned could channel or meet the state BN chairman personally or they can also bring it up to the state Cabinet where the LDP has a representative who happens to be a deputy chief minister,” he said. LDP vice-president Datuk Peter Pang is a Sabah deputy chief minister.

Salleh said making such a statement openly was uncalled for and was not in line with the BN spirit.

He said the outcome of the Sibu by-election should not be linked to the political scenario in Sabah, let alone give the impression that Sabah and Sarawak should no longer be regarded as the “fixed deposit” for the BN.

Salleh called on the BN component parties in the state to work hard and hand-in-hand to ensure that the BN continued to be the No. 1 choice of the people.

RM5m for flood mitigation project in Rejang Park on hold, after all Robert Lau did not win

The prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that he has not yet decided on the RM5 million allocation for flood mitigation projects in Rejang Park in Sibu. This was an offer he made to the voters there which came under fire from various quarters particularly from the leaders in DAP. Najib said "We will see first, because we have not made any decision on that,”

He was speaking to the Rejang Park voters the night before the by-election that “If Robert Lau becomes the MP on Sunday, on Monday I will ask the cheque to be prepared” but Robert Lau, the SUPP candidate failed to win the by-election. DAP’s Wong Ho Leng won by 398 votes.

YOU ARE JUST LIKE A KINDY KID

YOUR BEHAVIOUR STINKS

DONT PLAY PLAY

AFTER ALL ITS NOT YOUR MONEY, ITS PUBLIC FUNDS

MORON

THE PEOPLE'S NEEDS COME FIRST,ELECTION OR BY ELECTION.THAT THIS HAS NOT BEEN DONE SINCE 1963 SHOWS TOTAL NEGLECT OF THE PEOPLE'S NEED. AFTER ALL IT IS THE PEOPLE'S MONEY.
THERE IS NO BARTAR TRADING HERE. THE PM WAS WRONG, AND WE HAVE TO SEND A STRONG MESSAGE IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS.

he said "you help me, i help you" now it seems like "you dont help me, why should i help you" ???

Don't worry! Even if UMNO BN would have won, the money would never reach the project only someones pockets. We in Sabah know that since we get the promises but never the full amount of money to finish a project! So for you, nothing is lost! It would have been a MOCK CHEQUE ONLY!

Karpal accuses PM for ‘violating election law’ and calls for probe

Karpal Singh, the chairman of DAP is accusing the prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for violating the election law when he ‘made a deal’ with the people of Sibu. Karpal said that Najib was "all too obvious" and "blatant" in vote buying during campaigning in the by-election, which was won by the DAP. He said "One day before polling, the PM went to Sibu, and this is what he said. 'I want to make a deal with you...can we have an understanding or not?'. The understanding was quite simple, I help you, you help me,'" Najib was addressing some voters at Rejang Park where he pledge RM5 million for flood mitigation projects in the area. He was also reported to have said “If Robert Lau becomes the MP on Sunday, on Monday I will ask the cheque to be prepared”

Karpal added that “Najib had sought to strike a bargain with the mainly Chinese crowd to secure a win for BN candidate Robert Lau, in return for a RM5 million federal government allocation for flood mitigation work in the area. This is an offence under Section 10(a) of the Election Offences Act. I wonder if the PM knows the law. I'd advise him to carefully go through the Election Offences Act. The PM could lend himself in jail. If he's not careful we may have a by-election in Pekan," He calls on the EC (Election Commission) to investigate the prime minister on this issue.

Karpal added that “Najib's phrase 'Do we have a deal? If Robert Lau wins, we will give you RM5 million' has said it all. I'd advise the DAP leaders in Sibu to make a police report. The MACC must come into it. It's too serious coming from a PM. It can't be accepted. We don't want a precedent like this to be set. Of course there have been (election promises) like this in the past

New campaign tactics by opposition cost BN Sibu seat

Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said today new tactics employed by the DAP to garner the support of voters cost the BN the Sibu parliamentary seat.

“This time we had a different sort of campaigning on the part of the opposition, and there were many outsiders coming in,” the Sarawak chief minister told reporters after attending the State Legislative Assembly sitting here.

He said the Sarawak BN would formulate a new campaign strategy for the next state election to mount a serious challenge and counter all the baseless allegations brought by the opposition against the state government.

The next state election is due before May next year.

Taib (picture) also denied that the BN lost due to protest votes cast by the Sibu voters to show their displeasure with senior politicians in the state.

On Monday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the BN election machinery was not as creative or energetic as the opposition’s, which resulted in the BN losing the by-election.

Najib said the BN machinery still followed the old way of campaigning.

In the by-election, the DAP’s Wong Hong Leng secured 18,845 votes to win the seat by a 398-vote majority, defeating Robert Lau Hui Yew of the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), who polled 18,447 votes, and independent candidate Narawi Haron, who only managed 232 votes and lost his deposit.

Acting Sultan gives RM100,000 to shot palace guard’s family

Acting Kelantan Sultan, Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra, today gave a cash contribution of RM100,000 to Ramli Mohamad, 50, the Kelantan palace guard who was shot at close range by four unidentified assailants on May 1.

Kelantan royal household comptroller Datuk Mohd Halim Hamad said the personal contribution from Tengku Muhammad was to ease the burden of Ramli’s wife and five children.

Mohd Halim said Ramli, who has worked at the palace for 17 years, was now in critical condition.

“The acting Kelantan Sultan is very concerned with the condition of Ramli who is receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital (HRPZII).

“The doctors have managed to remove the bullet but his condition remains critical because some of his important organs are infected,” he told reporters after visiting Ramli here today.

In the 12.25am incident on May 1, Ramli, who lives in Kampung Sungai Pinang, was on his way home after duty at the Kubang Kerian palace when he was shot near Kampung Sungai Nyior, Palekbang, Tumpat.

Halim said the police were still carrying out investigations on the incident.

He added that despite the recent conflict in the Kelantan palace, Tengku Muhammad Faris continues to show love and affection towards his family, especially his father, Tuanku Ismail Petra, who is the Sultan of Kelantan.

The Kelantan royal family conflict started after Tuanku Ismail Petra was admitted to the HUSM Hospital in Kubang Kerian on May 14 last year and later to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on May 24 due to illness.

Tuanku Ismail returned to Kelantan on March 3, but was again admitted to HUSM on May 4 for follow-up treatment.

However, Tuanku Ismail’s third son, Tengku Temenggong Tengku Muhammad Fakhry Petra, had told reporters that he would take his father back to Singapore for treatment, but the purported flight was barred from landing at the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport while Tengku Muhammad Faris issued a directive to the police that any intended movement of the Sultan would require his approval. — Bernama

We were caught off guard by DAP – SUPP

Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam, the president of SUPP said that the reason they lost in the by-election of Sibu was because they were ‘caught off guard’ after the opposition raised 2 religious issues. Robert Lau represented the SUPP for the BN (Barisan Nasional) lost to DAP’s Wong Ho Leng by a 398 majority votes. Dr George said “The controversy over the word “Allah” was capitalised to devastating effect. Yes, this issue was very damaging. The Opposition used it to full effect.” He added that “The Opposition also claimed that Bibles were seized and burned in Peninsular Malaysia. Personally, I don't believe that we (the Govern-ment) would do such things. However, the tide turned against us because the Opposition used such controversial and sensitive issues. We (the SUPP) were not prepared to answer such allegations because we never encountered such religious problems in the state. We were overwhelmed by the issues they brought up,”

He added that “In previous elections, the Opposition harped on such issues, but the people understood when we replied. This time, the issues raised were of a totally different nature. We were not prepared,”

Wee slams Nik Aziz for calling him childish

Wee Choo Keong, the Wangsa Maju Member of Parliament who resigned from the PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) has slammed Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, the Mentri Besar of Kelantan for his comment about his (Wee) resignation. Nik Aziz called him childish for resigning from PKR. To this, Wee said “If taking a stand on a matter of principle - because the Selangor Pakatan Rakyat government no longer practises what it preaches - is considered immature by Tok Guru, then I don't want to be 'mature',”

He added that “I resigned from PKR because of the inconsistencies in Pakatan Rakyat in handling the sand mining scandal involving Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd (KSSB), a Selangor state-owned company. In response to Kapar MP S. Manikavasagam and support for his stand in the scandal, I issued a statement calling for steps to be taken by Pakatan to set up a Royal Commission to investigate the scandal. The last straw that broke the camel's back was after Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim instructed the state assembly's Select Committee on Competency, Accountability and Transparency to investigate the matter. The following day, KSSB issued a press statement to demand that Manikavasagam retract his statements on the scandal or face a defamation suit. This is a clear act of intimidation and gagging of a PKR MP, which was unacceptable to me. This has caused me to take the stand to resign,”

Support for PKR eroding – Rais

Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim, the Minister of Information Communication and Culture has poured more cold water in the so-called ‘eroding’ dominance of the PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) where he commented that the party is losing its foothold with the increasing number of members who are leaving the party.

He said that the party is now seen as one which is losing its ground and relevance. Rais Yatim said “The PKR was now perceived as a party which was losing its ground while its dominance was eroding. Apart from mesmerising in (PKR advisor) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's oratory skill, PKR is losing the support of the people while its struggle is in disarray. (As such) we urge the remaining members of the party throughout the country to think hard and find a new direction under the auspices of a more meaningful struggle,"

Problems faced by PKR are all caused by troublemakers from Be End. Their evil plans failed in Sibu is a clear signal for them to stop. If these troublemakers still dun repent, God Almighty will wipe them out completely in due course.

Rais, Mr. Two Head Snake, many of us know who you are and what you're good at is that you know how to please your master and bark at the right time and right place. I strongly believe that you will come to please PKR when your days are numbered in BN.

I feel so sad as you fall into the senile group of politician like Tun Apa Nama and Bozo Hamid who simply use ISA to arrest people. Yous seems to not know what should be said and do b'coz you carry your master ball too high that they covers your eyes and consciense. You are old already, don't make a fool of yourself and save some respect for yourself so that you can be remembered well.

many of the PKR leaders who are leaving are there for personal gain and not for the party and people.Najib the idiot is giving away millions to make them abandon the PKR.They are not going to be loyal to him as they are only mercenaries. They are like rats that will leave a sinking ship.Anwar and the PKR loyalists are like the proverbial Phoenix, that comes out of the fire rejuvenated.Come GE 13 and Najib won't have enough money to throw around. He may even run away from the country to join his crony Razak Baginda after the election loss.

DAP takes Sibu

The DAP pulled off a surprise win in the Sibu by-election today, defeating Barisan Nasional’s (BN) SUPP by 398 votes in a hard fought race.

DAP’s Wong Ho Leng polled 18,845 votes compared to BN candidate Robert Lau’s 18,447 votes.

The margin of victory was just a little more than the 395 spoilt votes. The independent candidate garnered 232 votes.

“Thank you Sibu. Thank you Malaysia. One small step in winning Sibu, one giant step to winning Putrajaya, “ Wong said after he was declared the winner.

BN had earlier been expected to retain its Sarawak stronghold but lost despite the best efforts of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The Sibu vote is seen as a bellwether for the Sarawak state elections which must be called by next year.

Asked by reporters today what he thought today’s result would mean for impending state polls, Wong said “Sarawak is ready for change.”

DAP is the biggest opposition party in Sarawak and is expected to put up a serious challenge in the next state polls.

Today’s result is also significant in that Pakatan Rakyat (PR) has snapped a streak of successive defeats to BN in recent by-elections.

The count now is 8-3 in favour of PR in terms of wins in by-elections held since Election 2008.

Today’s result is also a setback for Najib who had personally campaigned for BN and had placed his own reputation on the line.

Najib has been counting on Sabah and Sarawak as BN’s fixed deposit, but today’s result shows a major swing from 2008 when BN won the seat by more than 3,000 votes.

Today’s result also raises two thorny issues — how to deal with the Tan Sri Taib Mahmud factor and whether to push for state polls which sources say had been slated for October this year.

Taib, who has been at the helm for more than two decades now, was absent from most of the Sibu campaign because BN had anticipated DAP attacks against his leadership.

The white-haired chief minister known as “pek moh” among Chinese voters has been heavily criticised for alleged abuse of power.

He has to call state elections by next year and Najib and BN had been hoping a resounding win would provide the ruling coalition the momentum needed to go into the next general elections.

The victorious Wong called his win tonight a miracle.

“It is a miracle we have created together. For those who did not vote for me I now want to be your friend,” he said.

Hope the goverment will wake up, not all communities are greedy, what the PM did yesterday was unthinkerble saying that he will only provide the ringgit 5milliom to help the flood areas only if BN were to win.Isnt this some sort of money politics or even corruption.

First they tried to bribe with the millions of dollars. They then try entice by making PKR MP resign. But Najib failed miserably. He thought he can buy us with money. Yes he can but some but not all. Hip hip hooray to the people of Sarawak. You have finally stand up to money politic and buy election.

Home Minister ‘surprised’ with many without MyKad or birth cert

Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, the Home Minister said that he is surprised to see so many ‘stateless’ Malaysians who are without their MyKad while there is a big number who do not have birth certificates of which a majority of these cases are in Sarawak. He said that “The National Registration Department's mobile units had found that as many as 30,000 people did not have MyKad, 96,000 people did not have birth certificates and more than 60,000 people were holders of red identity cards.

The majority of these cases were in Sarawak” Speaking at the BN (Barisan Nasional)’s campaign in Sibu he added that “In Sibu itself, there are people living and working here who have no MyKads! We did not know the problem was so widespread. We knew many rural people did not have these personal documents but not in the cities and towns. I am committed to resolving these problems because they are among the top priorities for the Government's key performance indicators. The birth certificate and MyKad woes must be solved immediately or else there would be more children who could not sit for public exams, thereby increasing social problems involving school dropouts.”

Ever big mouth `His-shame`, dont try to be so arrogrant not unless your men are cheating out on you all this while . Federal govt had never cared about the welfare of its people. Your men only cares about giving MYKADS and birth cert to illegal immigrants when there are kick-backs . Poor rural folks have nothing to offer. The MP`s are equally to be blamed for cheating the people all these years !

Recapturing PR-led states will not involve persuading PR assemblymen to cross-over - Mukhriz

Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, the son of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad claims that the BN (Barisan Nasional) will not use ‘dirty’ ways like persuading elected assemblymen to jump ship by recapturing the states which are won by the opposition. Instead the BN has its own ways of doing so and enticing the representatives to cross-over is not one of them.

He said “BN would ensure that any action taken before recapturing the opposition-held states was supported by the people. This is more respectable and the important thing is that we regain the support and confidence of the people. Getting the opposition assemblymen to cross over can be done but the public may not be supportive of the move. What was happening in the political scene now was that more opposition elected representatives, especially from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), were leaving the party as they had lost confidence in the leadership. However, BN would not be an opportunist by meeting the elected representatives involved and persuading them to join BN. We don’t waste time on this, but what we’re doing is working hard to convince the people to support us and addressing the weaknesses in BN, so that eventually the people will come back to us. I am confident that the support we lost in the last general election will return to us,”

MONEY POLITIC AGAIN

JUST LIKE ULU SELANGOR

F U C K I N G GOVT

USE MONEY TO BUY VOTE

IS THIS ALL YOU CAN DO????

F U C K

He is nuts trying to get RM5 million to lure votes. Doesnt he realise that Sibu is known to have the most millionaires and billionaries among Malaysians. Probably by adding TWO EXTRA ZEROS he might get it done but again anything can happen. Past records had shown that certain tycoons had thrown in huge sum of monies to rid BN off and place the opposition into place ! Again,as a PM , this has gone to show how much he is worth. How could any normal Malaysians believe in his 1Malaysia concept ? Rakyats of Sibu, wake up from your sleep and do the rakyat a favour. Dont waste your votes for nothing. Vote the opposition !!!

What an open and crude bribe, only in Malaysia, In any other country in the world the people will have rejected UMNO outright !

I say to the Chinese in Sibu, that if they accept this bribe, then for their children and thereafter, the Chinese will be forever discriminated. This is one chane for the Chinese to wake up and do the rightn thing for themselves and their children and their grandchildren.

My Chinese brothers & sisters do not sell your votes too cheaply; reject UMNO & Reject MCA vote for a bright future for your selves and your children and their children VORE PAKATAN RAKYAT !

Dear brothers & sisters and CHIN LAN ! DON'T BE AN ARSEHOLE LIKE mca, THIS IS THE ONE CHANCE THAT YOU CAN BE EQUAL MALAYSIAN WITH THE BUMIPUTRA, and don't give up that right. You vote is equal to that of the Malays and this only comes because there a DSAI to become Prime Minister. Do not listen what they say of DSAI because all politicians are the same, but in DSAI the Chinese will get a chance to have the DAP, Lim Kit Siang, Lim Guan Eng and others to defend our citizenship rightss against the p*gs like Ibrahim Ali ! Do you want a Prime Minister like Ibrahim Ali ?

Is there anyone to remind all of us Chinese that if we do not vote for the candidate of UMNO's choice WE WILL GET THE KERIS IN OUR BACKS OR C4 BLOWN UP OUR ARSES ? Do not worry that you do not know DSAI because I too I do not know DSAI but he is our only hope ! On the other hand do you know the BN candidate ? You do not know him either right ? So what is the difference between the two ? VOTE PAKATAN RAKYAT AT LEAST YOU WILL NOT GET C4 UP YOUR ARSES !
