Three police teams will investigate a Bersih supporter’s death and also claims by Tung Shin Hospital specialists that tear gas and water cannons were fired into the city hospital during last weekend’s rally.
City CID chief Datuk Ku Chin Wah said one team will investigate Baharuddin Ahmad’s death at the rally for electoral reforms while one will probe the doctors’ claims and the last team will investigate the incident itself, which has been denied by the police and hospital management.
.“We will investigate the incident and that includes taking statements from the doctors, eye-witnesses and the personnel on duty then,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama Online today about the hospital incident.
Ku told The Malaysian Insider later that another independent police team will probe Baharuddin’s death at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital last Saturday after the 56-year-old collapsed near KLCC while running away from police tear gas and water cannon bombardment.
A group of activists and PKR lawmakers sent a protest note to the Bukit Aman federal police headquarters today over the man’s death.
The city CID chief said the independent teams will probe allegations of police brutality.
The Bar Council had accused the police of “arbitrarily, indiscriminately and excessively” firing from water cannons and launching tear gas canisters at close range and at eye-level at Bersih 2.0 protesters.
Ku also said police will monitor Bersih’s call for supporters to wear yellow every Saturday until free and fair elections happen in Malaysia.
Bersih has yet to send a memorandum on its eight demands to the palace as police blocked its efforts on July 9.
Police had estimated 6,000 people turned up for the rally calling for free and fair elections but Bersih said 50,000 braved a city-wide lockdown for the rally.
The Tung Shin incident allegedly happened in the hospital compound when police tried to chase away Bersih supporters from the area.
Eleven specialists from the hospital came out on Wednesday to contradict the official version of events after Tung Shin Hospital board issued a statement on Monday.
The specialists were Dr Musa Nordin, Dr Sheikh Johari Bux, Dr Ng Kwee Boon, Dr Ng Swee Choon, Dr Ronald Macoy, Dr David Quek, Dr Mary Cardozo, Dr Farouk Musa, Dr Mazeni Alwi, Dr Pixie Low and Dr Steve Wong.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai had initially agreed with the hospital but has now ordered a probe into the incident.
