PAS is contradicting the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) Selangor government by calling for the cancellation of the state-approved upcoming MTV World Stage concert here, Wanita MCA said today.
Wanita MCA secretary-general Senator Chew Lee Giok also pointed out that the Islamist party’s opposition to the popular concert, which features American rock band 30 Seconds to Mars, put Malaysia in a bad light.
“Opposition to events like these gives outsiders the impression that Malaysia is a close-minded state, which we are not,” said Chew in a statement today.
“PAS needs to stop outright objecting to concerts, as it always does, and instead have a constructive dialogue with the involved parties to work out a solution, as politicians should,” she added.
PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi reportedly said that his party was against concerts that encouraged immoral activities.
PAS Youth had protested a concert by openly gay “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert last October, but authorities allowed the concert to proceed after imposing guidelines that required he tone down his act.
American R&B star Beyoncé Knowles was also forced to postpone a concert in 2009 after PAS Youth objected to her sexy outfits and provocative stage moves that it said would “erode the moral values” of Malaysian youth.
PAS’s Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad reportedly said that he opposed the MTV concert, which will be held this Sunday in i-City here, as it was too close to Ramadan next month.
He also said about 2,000 residents in Section 7 here were against the concert venue as i-City was near a residential area.
Chew pointed out that Khalid could work with the authorities to minimise possible disturbances to residents, instead of calling for an outright ban.
“The complaints of the people should not be a platform on which a politician twists the message into an assault against any party (government or commercial entity), as PAS has done with their opposition of the MTV World Stage concert,” said the Selangor Wanita MCA chairman.
Chew also stressed that the MTV concert here will promote Malaysia as it will be broadcast to 162 countries.
Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said earlier today that alcoholic drinks and cigarettes will not be sold at the concert to ensure that Muslim culture in the Malay-majority state capital will not be compromised.
The MTV concert will feature local rock band Pop Shuvit, Korean boyband BEAST and American alternative rock band Neon Trees, besides 30 Seconds to Mars, whose lead vocalist is American actor Jared Leto.

If the faith is strong , the music and dancing should be entertaining. Beyonce's dancing is provocative and sexy, our own Malay traditional dances with the swaying too are seductive, right? So it doesn't matter. As for PAS Youth, while your elders are making the wise moves, the youth is making the unpopular moves. Is it because of attention deficit disorder which is further amplified by the mainstream media?
At least PAS has a stand and not just 'pak turut'.
