DAP slams police for arrest of Beng Hock’s sister

Share
Ng Wei Aik, the publicity secretary of the DAP Youth has hit out at the police for arresting Teoh Lee Lan, the sister of the late political aide Teoh Beng Hock who was arrested together with some others of the Malaysians for Beng Hock movement for distributing flyers and brochures on the death of Beng Hock in Gua Musang. They were detained for about 7 hours before they were released.

Ng said “The police allegations against the four, who arrived in Galas yesterday to seek justice for the deceased DAP political aide, is “shocking and absurd”. The police have alleged that the group had contravened Section 4A (1) of the Election Offences Act by engaging in campaigning activities at the by-election. What is wrong with a member of the rakyat campaigning in any election to voice his or her dissatisfaction to the leaders or candidates? If the four persons arrested are not supposed to be campaigning to influence the choice of candidate, then what of the Barisan Nasional supporters who try so hard to do the same in Galas? This just shows that the leaders do not want to heed the voice of the people, to the extent that they are abusing the power of the police to make arrests without reasonable grounds,”

He added that “A police report was made regarding the incident, yet even before any police action has been initiated, it is the complainants who end up arrested by the police. This proves that the police only give special protection to BN leaders, and not to the ordinary rakyat who have been harmed as a result of BN's actions. If not, the people who uphold the principles of justice need to seize the opportunity at this by-election to teach a huge lesson to the BN, who are increasingly arrogant such that they can dismiss the voice of the people in such inhumane ways.”

Meanwhile, Chong Kok Siong, the spokesperson for Malaysians for Beng Hock movement said "This is barbaric, we are quite upset about it. We were just waiting peacefully exercising our democratic right to meet an elected representative. The people should be able to meet with parliamentarians any time. The people are their bosses,"
