Many independents contesting shows democracy healthy in Malaysia, says Ahmad Zahid
The emergence of many independent candidates in the 13th general election (GE13) shows that democracy is alive and healthy in Malaysia, says Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
"No matter how many candidates are contesting in this general election, ultimately it's the voters who decide who should represent them.
"But they should be smart in choosing the candidates. The important thing is to vote in Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates because if these individuals become elected representatives, they're going to help the people.
"I think we should reject (the independent candidates) because most of them are those who are disappointed for not being selected by their party to contest," he said after opening the Karnival Sukan Rakyat in Sungai Ipil, here, today,
A total of 79 independent candidates will vie for parliamentary seats and 191 for state seats in GE13.
