Police have uncovered three weapons stashes near Sogo shopping complex here which they said appears to be “a preparatory move” by Bersih supporters ahead of the July 9 rally.
The weapons comprise three machetes, one butcher’s knife, one hand saw, eight Molotov cocktails, two metal pipes and some 40 firecrackers. Eight surgical masks and four Bersih T-shirts were also included among the weapons.
Some of the weapons and T-shirts seized which police say point to Bersih.
The three packages were found hidden among flowerpots in front of The Ship restaurant in Pertama Kompleks, behind Sogo and underneath the staircase of Wisma Bumi Raya, all within 150m of each other.
Police made the discovery at 6.30am yesterday after being tipped off by two members of the public who saw three suspicious masked men wearing white skullcaps in a silver Waja throw a plastic bag behind some flowerpots outside Pertama Kompleks.
Sogo is one of the three assembly points for the July 9 Bersih 2.0 rally, along with Dataran Merdeka and Kampung Baru Mosque.
Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Amar Singh Ishar Singh said the find suggests that Bersih supporters are planning to use the weapons during this weekend’s planned mammoth rally.
“This is what we see. From the facts of it, from the surface of it, it looks like [the weapons] will be used by them for the rally and procession,” he told reporters at Kuala Lumpur contingent police headquarters here.
“You can see, the T-shirts are there. You can see Molotov cocktails have been set up and also weapons to be used. So, it clearly shows, on the surface of it, to be used during the rally.”
But Amar said the police were still “working all angles” to see who was responsible for planting the weapons.
“We’ll investigate on what is seen with us first and then we’ll see who actually planted these items,” he said.
He said police were now reviewing CCTV footage obtained from shops in the area to try and identify the three occupants of the Waja.
Amar added that there was a “high possibility” that there were more weapons stashes to be found and said the police were working to locate them.
Free Malaysia Today reported today that a similar cache of weapons was found in the jungle area behind a temple at Batu 12, Jalan Gombak Lama by Orang Asli men, who alerted the police of their find.
The online news portal, quoting sources, said five traveller bags and two garbage bags were found containing 44 Bersih T-shirts, 20 parangs, 36 Molotov cocktails, 16 lighters and hundreds of ball bearings for use as slingshots.
