Mimicking Bersih, Perkasa has no ball , now eyes stadium rally
Perkasa has applied to three stadiums in the capital city for its own rally on July 9 to counter the Bersih rally, the Malay rights group’s president Datuk Ibrahim Ali said today.
He explained that Perkasa has decided not to call off its “Gerak Aman” (Peace Movement) as Bersih has persisted in its wish to hold a rally to demand for free and fair elections even after meeting with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin yesterday.
“If Bersih truly acquiesces to and accepts the advice of the King, we will follow suit,” he told reporters at Dewan Kelab Sulaiman here today.
“But we all know that after Ambiga met the King, she said she would still have the rally in a stadium.”
Perkasa offered on Monday to call off its counter-rally as a sign of respect to the King’s call for peace but stressed that their decision depended on whether Bersih would cancel its planned rally this weekend.
Ibrahim said today that Perkasa has submitted applications to Malaysia Stadium Corporation this morning for the use of three stadiums in Kuala Lumpur — Stadium Merdeka, Stadium Negara and Stadium Titiwangsa — but had yet to receive a reply.
Perkasa may consider holding the Gerak Aman rally on another date if it is unable to book a stadium for Saturday, he said.
Ibrahim also revealed that 14,661 members of Perkasa and other non-governmental organisations — including 2,000 non-Malays — have already signed up for the counter-rally, adding that he expected this number to surpass 15,000 in the next few days.
In an unprecedented move, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin stepped in on Sunday to diffuse growing tension by advising the Najib administration and Bersih 2.0 to hold consultations over the issue of free and fair elections.
The constitutional monarch rarely issues edicts or statements but the heightened atmosphere over the past week had prompted Istana Negara’s intervention.
