Sixteen men have been arrested in Selangor in relation to the July 9 Bersih rally, adding to the 30 PSM members detained in Penang over the weekend.
According to Selangor police chief Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah, the individuals were arrested for instigating the public to attend the rally calling for electoral reforms, which authorities have deemed illegal.
“These men were arrested around Shah Alam, Gombak, Klang North and the latest arrest involving eight people, were arrested at Taman Kosas in Ampang. Among the incitements were wearing and selling yellow T-shirts,” the CPO was quoted by Bernama Online today.
It is understood that all 16 have since been released on bail.
Hisan, however, added that the police action did not mean anyone in yellow garb will fall foul of the law.
Police on Saturday arrested 30 PSM members, including Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jayakumar, as they were making their way to a Bersih roadshow in Penang.
The group were initially believed to have been nabbed for distributing “inflammatory” material such as t-shirts and flyers, but are now being probed for allegedly “waging war against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.”
Authorities maintain none of the three rallies planned for July 9 will be sanctioned and that any mass gatherings on that day will be dealt with as illegal.
Bersih, however, insists the July 9 rally will still go on.
