According to a survey conducted by the Merdeka Centre, the approval rating for the prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak rose to a record high of 72%. In April last year, Najib’s ratings were at 69%. Ibrahim Suffian, the head of Merdeka Centre said that “Part of the electorate felt the country was heading in the right direction.” The survey was conducted via telephone where some 1,028 registered voters were asked to give their views on the PM’s performance, the NKRAs and the direction of the country. The voters who took part in the survey are aged 21 and above.
He added that "The economy is doing reasonably well, the nation's leaders are more dynamic and the general conditions in the country remain peaceful and conducive for further development. However, while public applauded efforts by the Government to address the country's issues, it was cautious on whether the goals could be achieved. The poll found 77% of Malays, 58% of Chinese and 80% of Indians expressing satisfaction over Najib's performance. The results also showed that 53% of voters chose "fighting corruption" as the most important issue the Government should concentrate on. The poll revealed that 61% of the respondents were dissatisfied with efforts to fight corruption while 57% were dissatisfied with efforts to combat crime.”
